Bye, and Hello Again - IU’s 5th Album (04/2021)

IU’s albums always come together through “clever planning.” Her musical endevors are always within the boundaries of what the public can accept, and she never gets misdirected or shows poor planning. However, this doesn’t mean she prefers safety over creativity. Having met her for the past 10 years, the crowd understand exactly what type of a person she is and her unique qualities. This is why they are willing to embrace whatever new challenge IU’s willing to take, whether that’s a musical transformation, or her efforts as an actress. She knows how to keep up with recent trends, yet converts that to fit her own style and color. This is an essential selling-point and attitude for an artist who must mass-produce popular culture. And with the release of LILAC, she successfully showed that she had broken through another layer in music.

As publicized, many of the songs in this 5th album have been produced by external producers. The style of each song varies quite significantly from one another and displays the risk of making the album feel like a shopping mall. However, with consistent lyrics and vocal work, they successfully eliminated the sense of imbalance.

First, we are able to understand how she had spent her 20s and how she is approaching her 30s through the cynth-pop song “LILAC,” which is not only the title but also the theme that runs throughout the entire album. The song, “Flu” contains a minimal background story, but with overly-direct lyrics and a unique vocal rhythm, it elastically draws in the listener. The second title on the list, “Coin” is a cheerful mood-making disco piece which provides us with the rare opportunity to listen to IU’s rapping, while “Hi Spring Bye” emanates Naul’s delicate touch and reintroduces a retro ballad song, which we have begun to forget.

The tasteful tropical pop piece, “Celebrity” grasps the listener’s ear with its attractive hook, and the duet “Troll” featuring Dean, naturally makes the head nod with its repetitive keyboard loop. Along with “Troll,” the next song “Empty Cup” demonstrates how IU has somewhat reinterpreted African-American music into her own style. In the dramatic ballad piece, “My Sea,” a magnificent string performance takes the listeners to the climax of a gigantic story, then playfully lets them go with “Ah Puh.” Then, she finally declares good-bye to her 20s in a light, carefree manner with the “Epilogue.”

Having run through the entire album, lyrics is one thing, but it seems a big chunk of the album was focused on the enjoyment of singing. IU’s unique style came to life through the lyrics, but minor irregularities were dispersed here and there within the vocals and the music. Regardless, we are not disturbed by these irregularities. They are more like slow-drive safety mechanisms to better enjoy the musical background she laid out. And this is not a show-off of her technical music skills, but rather a pure passion for music.

Just like this, she was ready to move on from her 20s. It would have been a rather depressing farewell If the outcome was disappointing, but our “clever” IU has yet again accomplished a difficult task. Can a farewell be anymore perfect than this? We welcome her 30s.
