[Formula of Love: O+T=<3]는 2021년 K-pop  최고의 앨범 중 한 장이다.

The Ultimate Recipe, Finally Found -TWICE [Formula of Love: O+T=<3]

For a K-pop group’s title song, “SCIENTIST” is lacking in glamour. The song has a moderate (even ambiguous) beat that is neither slow nor fast and is without a particularly dramatic build-up. With a seemingly average development with no intention of surprising the listeners, this number is an unexpected move for the title song of a full-length album released in two years. And yet, despite all this, it is one of the most polished and complete songs they have released in recent years. It is this song’s “subtle” charm that artfully reflects the overall direction of “Formula of Love: O+T=<3”, the album that shows off the mature evolution of TWICE.

The following song “MOONLIGHT” is no different. The refreshing sound and rich groove of the 80s R&B sound are refined with an extremely modern sensibility, the masterful handiwork of The Stereotypes. The “retro” sound is not unfamiliar territory for TWICE, yet this song brings singular attention to their vocal performance. Even though the song has an uneventful progression without any special surprises, the members are able to keep us in tight tension until the end with their vocal prowess that brings alive the song’s rhythmic beat. Even though the song’s range of notes is generally low, making it difficult to showcase their full scope of vocal ability, each member, whether leading or supporting, fully encapsulates the song’s groovy essence with their voice.

It is no exaggeration to say that this album contains almost all the musical ambitions that TWICE can attempt in one album. Among them, the song “CACTUS”, lyrics and melody written by Jihyo, is especially noteworthy. The warm and rich, yet powerful melody that flows freely between country pop and alternative rock makes this song by far one of the most impressive moments of the album. What’s astonishing is that every moment from the album, regardless of genre or style, feels consistently unified as a whole. Whether it is the groove of retro disco (“PUSH & PULL”) or the groove of a more contemporary style (“REAL YOU”), the sound of modern Latin trap or the sound of vintage retro, all are convincingly felt in TWICE’s magnetism and the harmony between its members.

JYP seems to have succeeded in discovering the most suitable recipe and combination for TWICE to shine through this album. The confident voices reveal that the teamwork between the vocal directors and the members was closer than ever. But is that all? It appears as though TWICE has found the prime point in which they can effectively control their own repertoire, beyond merely following the direction of any one producer or A&R. However, this is different from playing it safe. Though they are switching between various attempts, they have never felt like anyone else other than TWICE. In other words, it’s as if they are showing us that they can perfectly control and infuse every piece of music with the unique color that is TWICE. “Formula of Love: O+T=<3” is one of K-pop’s best album of 2021. Not to mention it being the pinnacle of TWICE’s career history.
