Lim Young-woong, A new hero in Trot

The time for Trot has returned. Loved by the nation for many years, this genre was about to die out as amusement for the mid-aged crowd but made a brilliant return through a reality competition show.

Ever since the start of the mobile era in Korea, TV stations had attempted everything they could to increase their viewership. They particularly needed to engage young people, who were in control of painting the future. However, more and more viewers drifted towards Youtube and OTT services; one broadcast station had bitterly stated that they made less revenue than 1 child Youtuber. As the youth continued to switch over to Youtube and OTT services, TV stations decided to loosen their obsession with the young crowd and focus on a new, more stable target. Known as “Family Drama” in Korea, “Soap Opera” content, followed by the news always had the highest viewership ratings, and the majority of this group were mid-aged viewers. This group still held a remote control in their hand when their children insisted on staring at the small monitors of their phones. The ultimate turning point was when the famous Trot singer, “Na Hoon-a”’s Covid-friendly no-audience concert was broadcasted live on TV. It hit more than 40% in viewership ratings. Korean broadcast stations were confident that they hit their optimal target audience through Trot.

This trend started in 2019 and has been continuing for 2 years. In particular, the most successful Trot-related reality competition show, “Mr. Trot” reached an unbelievable viewership rating of 35% and gave birth to countless Trot stars. And of all of them, we can’t help but focus on the one that proudly took 1st place - Lim Young-woong.

Born in 1991, this handsome young man was an applied music major who once dreamt of becoming a ballad singer, but began to walk down the path of Trot when he won the Grand Prize at “National Singing Contest” in 2016. His name was publicized when he appeared in “AM Plaza” in 2017, and became a nationally renowned Trot Singer when he came in first place at “Mr. Trot” in 2020. With more than 1.14 million followers on Youtube, he currently has more followers than most K-pop groups. He is likely one of the most sought-after celebrities in Korea right now.

With a solid foundation and a stable voice, Lim Young-woong’s key strength is his multi-diverse tones. His clean high tones are definitely a specialty, but his true appeal comes through when singing his low notes. Setting a thick, deep bass tone from the start of the song, his voice captivates the listener’s ears and has the magical ability to make them listen until the end. This, though, was possible due to his arduous efforts of practicing over 10 hours a day.

We’ve met him through many different TV shows. And he showed us who he was, but there is bound to be more inside. A portion of Lim Young-woong’s history has not yet seen the light of day. Then, who is really sitting inside of Lim Young-woong?

“Hello, this is Lim Young-woong. Congratulations on launching in Korea and I am honored to be here today. Thank you.”

Rolling Stone meeting with Lim Young-woong is definitely a refreshing picture. However, Trot is an important part of popular music in Korea. This type of music served as one of the most influential game-changers in the industry and declares that mid-aged individuals also have the right to enjoy music. As such, we were curious to know how Lim Young-woong, a Trot superstar, was doing in this important genre of popular music in Korea.

[RSK] Debuting with your single “My Starry Love” on the 9th of March, you came in first place at a TV show. You posted a short video on Youtube to share what it was like, but coming in 1st place in a Trot-based reality competition show, as well as your first 1st place, must have been extremely special moments for you.

- I was already surprised that I could appear in a TV show, which is usually focused on K-pop groups, but I couldn’t believe that I actually came in 1st place. As the award was made by members of “Hero Generation” (name of his fan club), I could genuinely feel the love of my fans.

[RSK] You are currently performing “My Starry Love,” written by Sul Woon Do. It must feel quite impressive to have received a song from a Trot legend and beginning to pave a new path with this song. We are curious to know whether you expected a huge response from the public when you first received the song, and what you discussed with Sul Woon Do when it was being written.

- I never really thought about whether this song was going to be successful or loved by the public. I was simply drawn to it from the start and wanted to sing it right away. The song really suited me well. I think songs feel and mean different things for each person, depending on their heart. Sul Woon Do told me that he wrote “My Starry Love” with his wife in mind, who stood by him all these years. I sang this song as I thought about my fans and family who stood by me.

Sul Woon Do is a singer-songwriter who represents Korea’s Trot world. With his powerful singing, stage performance, and song-writing abilities, he is a legendary artist who has been dominating the Trot stage with countless hit songs for over 40 years. It must have been a one-of-a-kind experience to have received a song from this God-like existence.

[RSK] You have received a lot of love through Trot, but have been working across different genres and merging them as well. What would you say is your musical perspective?

- I don’t think we need to categorize music by genre and discuss their differences. I grew up listening to music I liked and didn’t particularly prefer or avoid songs due to their category. Just as how Trot used to be the main popular music in the past, I wish to perform great songs without having to belong in a particular genre.

[RSK] You majored in applied music and dreamt of becoming a ballad singer, but is currently performing Trot music. We are curious to know what it felt like to go on stage and sing Trot instead of ballad songs, and what type of efforts you put in one you decided to change genres.

- I didn’t know I was going to become a Trot singer, but I was used to this form of music because I listened to it a lot as a child in my mother’s car or on the radio. Winning an award in the Trot category and starting my singing career, I began listening to, singing, and studying Trot. I realized it provides comfort and amusement through meaningful lyrics and a simple melody. Instead of imitating existing songs, I tried to practice delivering the meaning of the lyrics and my heart.

For someone who studied applied music and pop, transforming into a Trot singer was probably not an easy choice. But just like “Harvey Dent,” he was the type of person that simply went for it if a decision was made. His sprint towards Trot without looking back had completely changed his life.

[RSK] Noticing your expression of love towards your family on TV shows, who stood by you for many years, it seems impossible to discuss your music career without “family.” Is there something you have always wanted to share with your family, which you never had the chance to before?

- Love is all there is when thinking about family. But in reality, I feel like it’s always lacking. I want to be a better child for my mother and my grandmother, but I’m worried I can be a little stiff sometimes.

[RSK] You also seem to care immensely about your fan club, “Hero Generation.” The community really solidified as your fans from your less well-known days were joined with new fans through your appearance on TV under one interest. We could really feel the love you have for them when you referred to them as family. What kind of an artist do you wish your fans to remember you as?

- The few members that were in “Hero Generation” during my less well-known days were always with me at every performance and cheered me on. Just like my mother and my grandmother did. The club now consists of much younger members, all the way to very old members, and are showering me with endless love and attention. I wish to give back by working harder so that being part of “Hero Generation” is always a fun and happy experience.

Regardless of the type of art, support is a source of energy for all artists. His family and fan club “Hero Generation” have become a solid pillar in his life, and life-long partners who provide endless support for his music career. We decided to dig a little deeper into his music career.

[RSK] You’ve said before that you’ve “never been nervous on stage.” It must mean you prepare strenuously, and you don’t get stage fright by nature. With your career at its peak, we are curious whether you have been nervous recently.

- Is it really possible not to get nervous on stage? (chuckle). I think I recited “I’ve never been nervous on stage” like a spell so that I actually won’t feel it. The worst was audition programs. I am always nervous, but meeting the audience on stage has always been my happiest moment.

[RSK] You’ve mentioned before that you like the American pop artist, Michael Buble’s jazz singing, and that you want to give it a try as well. Jazz is a genre that is a bit more impromptu with a lot of variations. What part about jazz mesmerized you, and can we expect a jazz album release from you in the near future?

- I like the artist, Michael Buble. He was also impressive for singing old-school jazz as a very young man when he first debuted. This got me thinking that Trot in Korea is similar to jazz in the western world. That made me relate to him and I wanted to become like him in many aspects. I want to sing what sounds good, whether it’s jazz or any other genre.

[RSK] You are known to be a “training machine” with over 10 hours of training a day. Do you do or eat anything in particular to maintain your health? Many fans are worried about you (chuckle).

- I try to exercise whenever I get the time. I have a personal trainer, and I play soccer as well. I’ve been eating more meat for energy, and I take supplements sometimes, too (chuckle). I’m actually worried more about my fans. Please always be healthy and happy!

[RSK] Many people are consoled by your heartwarming voice, emotional expression, and your life story. Do you have moments where you were consoled, and if so, how?

- I get to hear so many different stories through “Romantic Call Center,” fan letters, social media messages, and comments. Some are fighting chronic illnesses, and some live through severely unfortunate circumstances… I feel greatly consoled when these people, living the lives of what you would expect to see in a movie, tell me that I have given them strength and hope. I also get goosebumps and energy when I get loud applause on the stage. Thank you, always. Really.

[RSK] Last but not least, what advice would you give to those who want to jump into Trot, and dream of becoming a Trot star one day?

- What advice can I give… (chuckle). The most important thing is to always enjoy it and feel happy when you sing.

His stage philosophy and music were entirely dedicated to the listeners. Still, he came across as “a leader of modern Trot” with his eagerness to work across many genres of music. He is just at the foot of his massive career waiting to unfold, but his determination to stay true to the basics made him feel exceptional. As such, his future looked as bright as his smile.

[RSK] Thank you for taking the time to participate in this long interview with Rolling Stone and we look forward to seeing your next steps. Thank you.

- I hope Rolling Stone continues to deliver great content to those that love music. Stay healthy and happy, everyone! Thank you.
