Coming to Theaters Near You: Rich Brian

By Jieun Jang, Chris De Luna & Jon Wong

Every year, budding artists join the music scene to leave their impression on the industry, whether to set the latest trend or become the next big viral sensation. Most of these rapid rises to fame come as quickly as they go, forgotten and passed up for the next big thing. But once in a while, there is a talent that shines beyond all others. Growing up in Indonesia, Brian Imanuel Soewarno dedicated his time to learning English by listening to American rap songs and watching YouTube videos. He hoped to pursue a career in the film industry, making short skits and music videos. So, he continued his efforts until he became fluent in the language. This culminated in his sensational debut hit "Dat $tick" and signing with the then-budding label, "88rising."

Since then, Brian has gone from being a YouTube star and internet personality to a critically acclaimed rapper, songwriter, record producer, and soon-to-be actor. In 2018, Brian debuted his first full-length album "Amen" featuring other critically acclaimed artists such as Joji and Migos' Offset. Following that, Brian kept the momentum going in 2020 with his sophomore album "1999."  Amassing millions of streams on Spotify, a talent for creating hip hop that captivates listeners and praise worldwide, he has proven his musical talents.

Coming off an unprecedented five featured songs on Marvel Studios' Shang Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings, we dive into an interview with this soundtrack star.

What is the weirdest or funniest moment you've had with your fans?

The weirdest interaction has to be when this one dude came into my house while I was wearing boxers. He brought me noodles and asked for a picture. Don't ever do that.

What is an activity you have always wanted to do but haven't done yet?

I've always wanted to have a LAN (local area network) party with my friends. It's so simple yet so hard to execute.

Who are some of the Korean artists you are a fan of?

I recently listened to Stereotype by STAYC, and it's so catchy.
