World Fame Us, Making Everybody Dance

Next to K-pop, dance is one of Korea's main strengths in popular global culture. Tracing the history of Korean dance leads us to the early days of K-pop. The sweat and passion of legendary dancers, like “Moon Night”, have significantly impacted K-pop and other Korean pop culture genres. Dancers are now rising to the star status equal to that of K-pop performers through TV shows like “Street Woman Fighter.” World Fame Us has gained considerable popularity among today's dance crews.

After its crew was formed, World Fame Us traveled the world and reached numerous milestones in the art of popping. Recognized as top tier, the crew has been praised for their precision in battles and performances both as a team and as individual dancers. Recently, their demonstrated popularity has resulted in advertising collaborations with various enterprises and with the legendary singer Na Hoona on his new song “Change.”

Rolling Stone Korea met with the five members of the World Fame Us crew. We talked about their dance philosophy and their thoughts as they traveled the world over the course of their career.

[Rolling Stone Korea, hereinafter RSK] Hello, World Fame Us! It's a pleasure to meet you for this interview. Before we begin, could you please greet Rolling Stone Korea's subscribers and briefly introduce yourselves?

Hello, Rolling Stone Korea subscribers! We are World Fame Us, Korea's representative street dance popping crew. Our crew was established in 2017 and is made up of five members, Lee Jaehyung (Poppin' J), Kim Haknam (Boogaloo Kin), Kang Hojin (Hozin), Lee Jonggeol (Jaygee), and Cho Inhwan (Hoan). Thank you for inviting us for the interview!

[RSK] There are various genres in dance, such as hip-hop, waacking, locking, and popping. Why did World Fame Us choose popping?

Lee Jaehyung (Poppin' J): When I saw a street dance video of dancers popping, it was the first time I immediately thought, "I want to do that." Who would've known I'd be dancing like that today? I started because it was fun and I liked it. But, I think I've stayed with it all this time because the more I learned and danced, the more I enjoyed it and was happy.

Kim Haknam (Boogaloo Kin): The first dance style I started with was hip-hop when I was younger. I liked the music and fashion. I also enjoyed the dance moves. So, I started dancing like that. Then, I got really knowledgeable about street dance. From the moment I learned about popping, it was as if I was being pulled toward it. I had to learn it. The dance was playing the muscles of my body like a drum. I had never seen anything like it, and it was so appealing to me.

Cho Inhwan (Hoan): When I first started dancing, I didn't know there were so many diverse styles. I was simply imitating the dance moves of singers that I liked or fooling around with my friends, imitating B-boy movements or doing handstands. Then, in middle school, I took an extracurricular activity, and a guest instructor was invited to teach us dance. That's when I first learned about the popping technique and the genre. I was instantly interested and started looking up popping videos. From there, I went down that rabbit hole. I guess I loved how this dance bounces the muscles through contraction and relaxation for the various moves in line with the music.

Kang Hojin (Hozin): I was instantly, strongly attracted to the technique known as "popping" when I saw it because it was like watching CG. When I learned more about it, I was drawn to its delicacy and sophistication of expression. I thought to myself, "This is it!" That's how I started!

Lee Jonggeol (Jaygee): It may seem very simple, but in my eyes, popping seems like the coolest dance style. So that's why I chose it. I've been dancing this style for 20 years. But, it still feels new to me today. And for real, I still want to be better!

[RSK] What significance do the members of World Fame Us have for each other?

Kang Hojin (Hozin): We provide each other with positive encouragement and inspiration. I can rely on them in all aspects of my life and dance. I learn so much when I'm with them. So, I'm greatly looking forward to our future.

Lee Jaehyung (Poppin' J): I'd say they are my life partners. This relationship started because we all love the same dance. But now, it is more than just dance. We influence each other's lives and are each other's rock.

Lee Jonggeol (Jaygee): Not a single one of them could be removed from my life, which is dance. They are my best friends and brothers who share my joy and sorrows and my first teachers and mentors. I am thankful that I'm always around people like them. Words fail to express my thoughts fully! I am really learning so much from them.

Kim Haknam (Boogaloo Kin): Hmm… I think we have become a family. (laughs) We're like part of a sitcom when we're all together because something always happens. We are five brothers with different personalities and natures. The funny thing is, none of us are even remotely similar. We are different. But when we come together, we create harmony and synergy. We are so comfortable with each other and always have fun together.

Cho Inhwan (Hoan): I'd like to say that my crew members are the most inspirational and stimulating dance companions!

[RSK] What would you like to achieve this year?

Cho Inhwan (Hoan): COVID has made many people's lives difficult, including dancers, as there are fewer opportunities for projects like stage performances. So, my wish for this year is to see the end of COVID. As always, my biggest goal is to keep working to improve my dance skills and level to avoid getting stuck. Also, this year, we'll be trying several things for various team projects rather than focusing on individual work. So, your encouragement will be greatly appreciated!

Lee Jonggeol (Jaygee): I'd like to be able to dance better than I did last year. I'd also like to be open to learning and accepting other dance styles. Let's go!

Lee Jaehyung (Poppin' J): Because we had so many things going on abroad before COVID, we haven't been able to show much of ourselves to Korea. We hope to approach the Korean people this year and show them our dancing through various mediums and collaborations.

Kim Haknam (Boogaloo Kin): In 2022, I hope to be able to promote World Fame Us and street dance to more people through various team activities, like ongoing projects and showcases.

Kang Hojin (Hozin): If the COVID situation gets better, I want to perform again with many other dancers! I hope we get the opportunity to feel each other's energy again.
