6. [RSK] K-pop

Play J, an artist who can’t hold back his love for K-pop

1. [Rolling Stone Korea (RSK)] Hello, Play J. It’s nice to meet you! It’s an honor to interview you for Rolling Stone Korea. Before we get started, please introduce yourself and say hello to our subscribers.

Hello. I’m Play J, a singer and TV program host who debuted in 2010. My first digital single album contained the songs “Remember” and “Only You” produced by Brave Brothers.

2. [RSK] Please tell the readers of Rolling Stone Korea how you’ve been doing lately.

Until recently, I’ve been in China hosting TV programs. Being an emcee was really fun, and the experience made me want to try harder and become even better. However, since I’m a professional singer, I miss performing on stage. But I wanted to have some other experiences. Currently, I’m arranging some new songs.

3. [RSK] I heard that you worked in Taiwan and other Chinese-speaking regions. You’re playing an important role in spreading K-pop culture to various places. So, I’m sure you were disappointed when the situation with Covid became more serious. Do you have any goals or plans for 2021, even in the current situation?

Up until last year, we were planning on making a program to spread K-pop culture. It was supposed to start in China this past March of 2021. But as COVID-19 continued, it got postponed. Right now, I’m just working on songs to resume my career as a singer while observing the situation. Actually, the album is complete. I made songs in the genres I wanted to try. But, I don’t have an exact release date yet because of COVID-19. I hope it will be released within the first half of this year. It’s an acoustic-based sound that goes well with summer. So, it will be relaxing and cool. I hope you are all looking forward to it!

4. [RSK] You’re the key player spreading the word about yourself and K-pop content around Chinese-speaking regions. Plus, you also have to continue promoting yourself as a singer. So, as a singer, what kind of artist do you want the public to remember you as?

When I worked in China and Taiwan, for a period of time, I was unable to continue my career as a singer, compared to my other work like being an emcee. But, I really just want to continue making music. So, there’s not a specific type of song or title I want the public to remember. I just want them to think that “Play J is a singer who makes music consistently.” I also want to improve and move forward step by step.

5. What do you think is the appeal of K-pop?

K-pop is appealing for more than just one reason. First of all, I believe that it has steady growth. It’s being updated daily instead of on a monthly or yearly basis. Plus, it’s very diverse. Various features form great harmony and create diversity. I think that’s what fascinates K-pop listeners.

6. [RSK] I heard that you got to shoot with various K-pop artists that are leading the industry. Are there any moments from the shoots that were memorable or any moments that you’d like to revisit?

Back in China, I hosted a program called “Korean Entertainment Star Dynamics.”  In Taiwan, I hosted “Idols of Asia” and “Play J’s Weekly Idol” for Taiwan MTV. This program featured various artists every day or week. BTS appeared on the program while promoting “Blood Sweat & Tears.” The theme was “Mukbang,” so we had to spoon-feed bingsoo to each other. They did it without any hesitation. I got to spend time with people their age. So, I had a lot of fun. HyunA also appeared on my show, and as it is a foreign program. However, some artists find it hard to get used to other cultures. But HyunA liked our program, so she appeared again with the other members. I have lots of good memories like these.

7. [RSK] In the interview you did in 2019 with another magazine, you said you want to work in various fields, such as men’s beauty or entertainment programs. What are some things you’re interested in or would like to try these days?

Because of the current situation, I’ve been watching lots of YouTube. So, I want to start a YouTube channel. But, it’s not so easy. I tend to do well once I start something, but I worry too much before starting. So, I’ve been postponing it because of my concerns. But, I want to try making YouTube videos.

8. [RSK] Last question, would you like to say anything to the young men and women who, like you, are trying hard to spread the word about K-pop culture?

When I interview for various mediums, I can see that lots of artists are exhausted. They get ready for the shoot from early morning or stay up all night preparing for the album. I believe that many artists may feel pressure as K-pop continues to expand. However, I hope they let go of the burdens and pressures associated with that and just enjoy making music. Everything might come up roses, or you might have a rocky road ahead. Some people just keep pushing forward instead of taking care of themselves. But I hope they take the time to look back on themselves once in a while.
