The Certainty Found in the First Chapter of Chaos

2021. 5. 31

TXT [The Chaos Chapter: Freeze]

Kim Youngdae

In their short time in the industry, TOMORROW X TOGETHER is one of the few idol groups successfully carrying out the basic yet most difficult task of making good music. In a business rife with all kinds of exaggerated concepts and universes, TXT doesn’t follow the traditional “K-pop formula.” Yet, they have managed to become the most anticipated group of the next generation with their new album, “The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE.”

The unfolding of emotions in this album, “FREEZE,” is unique. From the start, it expresses the emotional rollercoaster that occurs between chaos and certainty. The track “Anti-Romantic” starts off the album with an unexpected calm revealing the album’s theme with an ironic title, lyrics, and music. It leaves an emotional impression that doesn’t entirely go away. This song becomes the perfect intro for the more passionate moments to come. The next song, which is “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You),” is undoubtedly TXT’s most prominent track on this album. It was the most critical turning point in the story they have been trying to develop over their short career. In addition to the opening drumbeat that awakens the senses, you hear their mature vocal sound. The confidence one hears in the words, “I know I love you” instead of “I love you,” emerges from strong sentiment and desperate pleas. The emotion from HUENINGKAI’s “I was fine to die” and TAEHYUN’s “Save me” is almost heard as a cry within the song as they reach the emotional crescendo with “I know I love you.”

The intersection of hybrid rock and the retro disco sounds of “FREEZE” was like a mixture of trendy US and UK pop songs. But what makes TXT’s music different isn’t the few “wow” moments of each track but the details. As they have clearly shown in their album, TXT is a group whose literary and musical beauty stands out more than any other group in the current K-pop scene. They express the various emotions of teenagers and people in their early 20s. They capture the essence of normality and rareness in each song they sing. These stories aren’t separate from the music. Instead, they are delivered directly to the listener with a selection and arrangement of appropriate sounds and melodies. “Ice Cream” and “Dear Sputnik” are songs that also stand out as they have considerable literary wit, each expressing a story through impressive sound choices. Their music is elegant and sophisticated compared to the average K-pop idol music. But it’s also pure and refreshing when compared to that of American pop sound. This puts TXT in a unique position of living in between the worlds of a K-pop idol group and an American teen pop boyband.

As suggested by BIGHIT MUSIC, the future TXT may be a straight shot. The exquisite planning of each song may not be recognized by most. But those who listen to the music will find no awkward moments. It only has universal stories that naturally make you want to listen carefully. The music is appealing on its own. When the last note of “Frost” (their boldest track) finishes, we are left with a kind of certainty regarding both the present and future of TXT. It is undoubtedly one of the most impressive K-pop idol albums of the second half of 2021.
