BY Jeff Benjamin

2. The Weeknd – Save your tears

3. Justin Bieber – Peaches

The Deeper Colors of Kang Daniel

BY Jeff Benjamin

As an artist introduces themselves to the world, it’s typical to try to put into words the “color” that they want to show to the audience and fans. In Kang Daniel’s case, the singer-songwriter’s young but luminous solo career has already explored a full spectrum of colors to show not only his range as a K-pop artist but also the person behind the superstar.

After establishing his agency, Konnect Entertainment, Kang Daniel officially introduced himself as a soloist with the special album ‘color on me’. From the low-key hiphop/pop sound of the single “What Are You Up To” and the lullaby-like dedication to fans “I Hope,” the record-setting EP displayed a range of styles and sounds that the star hadn’t previously shared with fans as a part of the sensational project boy band Wanna One.

The EP set the stage for his “Color” trilogy series featuring CYAN, MAGENTA and YELLOW named after the CMY color model in which these three come together in various dyes or pigments to produce the full rainbow. Released throughout 2020 and 2021, these albums delivered a range of sounds like the Michael Jackson–like funk-pop in “TOUCHIN’,” dreamy R&B for “2U,” dancehall-inspired beats for “Waves,” dark-yet-hopeful rock riffs in “PARANOIA” and more to show an artist unbound by one style or sound but able to embrace a full palette of inspirations.

Kang Daniel met with Rolling Stone Korea and WWD Korea amid promotions for the pre-release single “Paranoia” and lead track “Antidote” from YELLOW. Turning topics of anxiety and mental-health struggles into mainstream and certifiable hits—including his first song entry on the Billboard charts— marked some of his greatest artistic and personal achievements yet.

“When we first began the Color series early last year, each EP was meant to represent different periods in my life,” Daniel shares. “We always knew that the series would end here, but I needed time to gather myself before touching on some of the subjects found on YELLOW. With YELLOW, I wanted to share one of the darkest periods in my career and not just fun music with a big performance. We have been preparing and working on this album the longest and I wanted to share some of my innermost thoughts and convey a sense of honesty with this release.”

Fans and the media have watched Daniel’s public battle with health issues and anxiety that, at one point, forced him to cut promotions prematurely. Instead of letting his problems get the best of him, the star translated that into his work and his biggest hit yet on the Korean charts.

“‘Antidote’ describes the pressure that people often experience in their lives when they feel like they’re at rock-bottom, yearning for help,” he explains. “The melody line of the song is very emotional and expressive with a very dark, strong, yet bare soundscape. For me personally, it has a very special message within the song. A lot of people might hear it as a cry for help, but I think that within that cry itself represents a will to live and move forward.”

That triumphant message comes through in the visuals and performance itself of “Antidote.” Viewers saw the star sharing poignant messages in the music video as dance through dozens of faceless people filming him with their smartphones before facing his fears in just a simple white T-shirt and jeans. Daniel says ending the “Antidote” live performance with special, interpretative choreography was important to him.

“When the drums are going crazy on the last chorus, all of the dancers join in and then I transition into a solo dance for the outro. I know it may not be a typical K-pop ‘point’ choreography, but this part was special to me because of what it represents.”

As not only the artist representing Konnect Entertainment but also its CEO, Kang Daniel has a responsibility to ensure those around him are supporting him to help him best share himself as an artist.

“The most important thing for my songwriting is definitely if I am getting my point across properly and if the lyrics are conveying the intended message,” he reflects on his creative process. “I work with my team to make sure I am delivering my message correctly. We constantly talk about what I want to say in my lyrics, and he is always helping me revise them to get it to where it needs to go. This was especially important with YELLOW because it was such a personal album. I didn’t want to make any mistakes. I wanted to get it all out.”

After completing the “Color” series, Daniel’s next step could lead him anywhere. While he notes Justin Timberlake’s transition from boy group member to solo artist inspired him in his path, Daniel says he’s focusing even more on the “creation of music,” working more closely with songwriters and lyricists and, in particular, enjoying the collaboration process more than ever.

“I think the collaborations might be one of the most fun parts in creating music,” he says after teaming with an impressive lineup of acts all with their own established colors as well: Zico, Steve Aoki, Simon Dominic, Yumdda, Dvwn, Jamie, Omega Sapien, Wonstein, Loco and more.

“There are so many people I am fans of and respect, but I love EDM music and I even collaborated with my producers, Inverness and Anthony Russo, earlier this year on a pop-electronic song and that was an amazing experience. So, if I had to choose, I’ve always loved electronic artists like Marshmello, The Chainsmokers or Alan Walker.”

But no matter which musical or professional path he takes next, what’s clear is that Kang Daniel has put in the work early in his solo career to show his full range of colors: the bright, the dark, the deep, the complex, and all the tints, shades and blends in between them all.

“I am not really sure, but my hope is that the fans have recognized the hard work and sincerity I put into my work as a solo artist,” he reflects.

Even if he doesn’t realize it himself, the color of Kang Daniel grows more beautiful and vibrant each day.

A New Generation of K-POP Stars, Kang Daniel

As we are now into the 2020s, the culture of K-pop idols is already on generation 3.5. In the short history of Korea’s popular music, the generations of K-pop are explained through the environment and experiences of the K-pop idols who debuted.

The 1st generation K-pop idols started to differentiate themselves from existing dance groups. This generation was a basic format of teenaged boy/girl groups who used dance music as their base. This was a time when singers and fans underwent many changes through experimentation. Also, because of the influence of the legendary K-pop group “Seo Taiji and Boys,” which disbanded in the mid1990s, the lyrics of songs mainly consisted of criticism of society and the anxiety of youths.

The 2nd generation got rid of the heavy themes popularized by the 1st generation and started to create more polished images. With urban dance as their base, they began to create a futuristic image with their costumes and hair. This generation became a starting point for K-pop idols’ music to spread from Korea to other parts of Asia and globally.

The 3rd generation was the generation of what was defined as “Universes.” It was a more refined format from the previous 2nd generation. Artists started to add storytelling into their groups. Each group member had an icon, and color and the focus was on securing a loyal fandom. They expanded their fan base to include South America, Europe, and finally, North America.

Now in generation 3.5, K-pop idols are emphasizing their platforms through media exposure. In addition to the strengths of the 3rd generation, this generation uses social media as the primary mode for promotions. They have expanded on the type of content used to promote themselves. In this era, K-pop idols from TV audition shows also started to emerge, which is an important aspect of today’s guests.

Season one of “Produce 101” one gained confidence after the successful experiment of I.O.I. During that time, “Wanna One” was one of the best K-pop groups that came out of season two. “IZ*ONE” was also a huge hit in season three. Following the success of the “Produce” series, many other audition programs started being produced. The music expanded to the genre of trot, which is enjoyed mainly by middle-aged audiences.

TV audition shows and the success of the “Produce” series were a huge shock and influence to people in the entertainment industry. During that time, the group that had the most commercial success was “Wanna One.” In fact, K-pop music became so popular, the demographic of fans rose to include middle-aged people. But among all the members, we cannot forget Kang Daniel, who was awarded first place.

Born December 1996 in Busan, this handsome, strong man’s obsession with dance began in middle school. His interest led him to learn breakdancing. In high school, he studied contemporary dance. At 20 years old, he became a trainee, which was his dream. But he did not debut as an artist right away. Then he entered “Produce 101 Season 2,” thinking of it as his last opportunity. After the show, his life changed. He gave his all as if his life depended on it. He started in 23rd place and finished in 1st to become a confident member of “Wanna One.”

The craze that “Wanna One '' brought was incredible. Every TV talk show wanted to have him as a guest. Every product they advertised sold out at a record rate. Kang Daniel was in demand by the public. Except for North Korea, his image could be seen everywhere on the Korean Peninsula.

After his wildly successful team promotions in 2019, he finally went solo. Fortunately, he had a powerful fan base since his Produce 101 days called, “DANITY” to support his transition. With his unique stage presence and charming nature, he has established himself as a successful solo artist. Meanwhile, he has showcased various musical themes about “color” in his 2019 special debut album, “color on me.” Now, as he is exceeding the expectations of his existing fans, he’s gaining more attention from people around the world.

Hello Kang Daniel, it’s nice to meet you! Before our interview, please introduce yourself and say hello.

Hello subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea, it’s Kang Daniel, back after finishing my promotion of YELLOW.

We remember the first time we saw you on TV. As an artist who continues to mature, how does it feel to look back on when you first debuted as a solo artist?

There were so many things that happened over those two years. I have been so moved by the love everyone was shown to me, especially during the times when I was really hurting. Everything, both big and small, that has happened has made me stronger. I’m not at the top (chuckle), but I think my worldview has become more expansive. I believe that has naturally become a part of my music and performances.

But if I had to choose an unforgettable moment, it would be my debut showcase. It was a starting point for me as an artist. It’s a day that comes to mind often and gives me a lot of energy. So many fans showed up. I was so nervous when I went up on stage that day (chuckle). But now that I look back, I’m just so thankful. I’m so grateful for everyone who waited for me and supported me.

We want to talk about your mini-album released on April 13, 2021. It’s clear that you wanted to tell the public about what was going on inside you through the title track, “Antidote,” which is the third chapter of the “COLOR” series. As you reflect on your recent promotions, what are some things that made you feel sad or something that left a deep impression?

I introduced the album like a journal written in the early morning because it brought me relief. But the stories told aren’t very cheery. If you focus on the music, you’ll hear there aren’t many things to laugh about. And since I haven’t been able to take a break since starting my promotion, I think I was physically a bit tired. COVID-19 and being unable to meet with my fans personally and perform for them added to this exhaustion. I get my energy from my fans when they are in front of me, giving their support. I think that was something that made me sad.

Since last year, you haven’t been able to meet your fans face-to-face, which we believe would have a negative impact on your performances and events. But now, there are a variety of ways to communicate with your fans, right? Recently you did a meet and greet with your fans through video call. What was different from a typical fan meet and greet, and are there any stories you remember?

When I was promoting my most recent album, I met my fans on video calls. But because we weren’t communicating face-to-face, there were things that I was bummed about. But the fans got used to it. From then on, whenever we talked through video calls, they were prepared. Some people composed acrostic poems, and sometimes I had to complete a few missions. (Chuckle) Whatever the method, talking with my fans is always a pleasure.

If you have a playlist that you enjoy listening to, please share it with your fan club, “DANITY,” who absolutely adore and care about you.

What is something you’ve recently bought that makes you happy?

I recently purchased a pair of headphones. I always carry them with me whenever I go out.

What are the three most important things in your life?

My mom, my cats, and music.

We think it would be impossible to describe you without using the words diligence and consistency! What has been your driving force to put forth such effort?

I think for me, there is an automatic pull towards trying out new things. There are so many things I haven’t tried yet, and that I want to show. More so than diligence or consistency is the fact that I don’t hold back when it comes to trying out new things. (Chuckle) And whatever it is I’m trying out, the biggest driving force is “DANITY.” When I think of my fans who listen to my music and enjoy my performances, it gives me a lot of energy.

When we think about your future, we predict that you will reach new heights and establish yourself even more as a solo artist through different music genres and choreography. If you were able to go back to when you first performed on stage, what would you tell yourself?

I think I’d say, “It’s not always as it seems. There are going to be hard times ahead. But keep at it and don’t give up. Keep pushing through!” (Chuckle)
