롤라팔루자 2022 : 우리가 본 최고의 장면 6가지
제이홉(J-hope)부터 제이콜(J.Cole)까지, 축제에서 가장 기억에 남는 몇 순간들을 정리해 본다
롤라팔루자 2022 행사가 올해 7월, 시카고 그랜트 파크에서 성공적으로 다시 개최되어 4일간 그 열기가 뜨거웠다.
J-hope, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, J.Cole, Machine Gun Kelly, Metallica, Big Sean, Green Day, and Jazmine Sullivan 같은 유명 스타들의 이름이 돋보였고, 이 밖에도 많은 아티스트들이 명단의 상단을 장식했다.
역대 최고 기록이 넘치는 4일간의 축제였다. BTS의 J-Hope은 롤라팔루자의 헤드라인을 장식한 최초의 대한민국 아티스트가 되었을 뿐만 아니라 미국의 주요 음악 축제에서 메인 무대 헤드라인을 장식한 최초의 대한민국 아티스트가 되었다. BTS와 같은 소속사인 Tomorrow x Together도 롤라팔루자에서 공연한 최초의 K-pop 그룹이 되었다.
한편 Pornos for Pyros 팬들은 1998년 해체 후 올해 초 다시 모이게 된 그룹의 재결합 공연을 볼 수 있었다
이 페스티벌은 다양한 장르의 아티스트들과 더불어 음악 산업을 두루 망라하는 게스트들의 출연에 완벽한 환경을 제공하였다. Big Sean은 임신한 여자친구 Jhene Aiko를 소개했고, J.Cole은 자신의 레이블 Dreamville의 소속 아티스트인 Bas & JID를 초대했다. J-Hope은 Becky G와의 콜라보 음원 “Chicken Noodle Soup”를 선보인 지 3년 만에 함께 라이브 공연을 펼쳤다. 또한 Tinashe, Mahalia, Sampa The Great, Sam Fender, Lil Durk, Eurovision 우승자인 Maneskin, Griff 같은 아티스트들이 주말 내내 무대를 빛냈다.

Jazmine Sullivan, 절대 음감으로 청중을 사로잡다
목요일에는 Jazmine Sullivan의 롤라팔루자 데뷔 무대가 펼쳐졌다. Sullivan이 자신의 노래로 팬들을 초대한 여정은 영적 체험이라는 말로 밖에 설명할 수 없다. 머리부터 발끝까지 형광 노랑빛으로 차려입은 이 알앤비(R&B) 가수는 청중에게 “창문을 부숴 본 사람이 있나요? 저는 있어요.”라고 장난스러운 질문을 던지며 자신의 히트곡인 “Bust Your Windows”를 부르기 시작했다.
그래미상 수상 가수이기도 한 Sullivan은 강력한 리프, 런, 백댄서들이 해석해 보여주는 모놀로그, 그리고 “On It”, “Insecure”, “Let It Burn” 등 팬들이 좋아하는 곡들을 부르며 청중을 사로잡았다. Sullivan은 Fugees의 고전이 된 명곡 “Killing Me Softly”의 신나는 커버를 부르며 관객의 떼창을 이끌어냈다.
Sullivan은 마지막 곡으로 앨범 “Heaux Tales”의 인기곡인 “Pick Up Your Feelings”을 불렀고 이에 호응하여 몸을 흔들며 합창하는 청중을 뒤로 한 채 공연을 마무리했다.

Tinashe, 무대를 뜨겁게 달구다
금요일에는 Tinashe가 바깥 날씨만큼이나 뜨거운 퍼포먼스를 선보였다. Tinashe는 공연 내내 재미있으면서 유혹적인 안무로 춤 실력을 뽐냈다. 셋 리스트에는 최신 앨범 “333”의 디럭스 버전에 수록된 “2 On”, “All Hands On Deck”, “Naturally”도 있었다. 피날레 곡인 “Bouncin”에서는 관능적인 안무, 의자 위에서의 트월킹, 문자 그대로 땅에서 튀어 오르는 댄스 브레이크로 무대가 후끈 달아올랐다.

Dua Lipa, 밤을 환히 밝히다
영국 가수 Dua Lipa는 이번 롤라팔루자 참가가 세 번째인 만큼 이 축제 무대의 전문가 다운 모습을 확실히 보여주었다. 금요일 밤으로 달려가는 즈음에 공연장을 가득 메운 관객들을 매료시킨 Mugler의 캣 슈트는 영리한 의상 선택이었다. Dua Lipa는 변함없이 손 꼽히는 팝스타로서의 저력이 있었고, 이는 “New Rules”, “Levitating”, “Pretty Please”, “Good in Bed”, “Don't Stop Now”를 한 마디 한 마디 목청껏 따라 부르는 팬들이 입증했다. Dua Lipa 무대의 하이라이트 중 하나는 낙태권을 보장했던 Roe v Wade 판결이 무효화된 사건을 언급하느라 노래를 잠시 멈추었을 때였다. Dua는 청중에게 이렇게 말했다. “여성의 권리를 위해 일어서고, 인종 차별에 맞서세요. 성 소수자(LGBTQ) 커뮤니티를 위해 일어나세요. 서로를 위해 일어서세요. 저도 제가 할 수 있는 모든 방법으로 여러분을 위해 여기서 목소리를 낼게요. 약속 드립니다.”

TXT, 역사를 쓰다
Tomorrow x Together는 롤라팔루자에서 공연을 펼친 최초의 케이팝 그룹이 됨으로써 역사를 썼다. 이 5인조 그룹은 Solana x Perry의 무대에 등장해 최신 타이틀곡 “Good Boy Gone Bad”, “Anti-Romantic” 등의 곡을 불렀고, 셋 리스트에 포함된 Iann Dior 피처링의 “Valley of Lies”는 Iann Dior이 직접 나와 함께 불렀다. 공연에서 가장 대단하게 보였던 부분은 이곳에 모인 많은 사람들에게 TXT의 노래가 생소할 것 같다고 Heuningkai가 말했을 때였다. “Magic”을 부를 때 일명 ‘모아(MOAs)로 알려진 TXT 팬들의 떼창과 응원봉의 물결이라던가 심지어 탬버린까지 치는 모습을 고려한다면, TXT의 롤라팔루자 무대 데뷔는 성공적이었음이 분명하다.

J.Cole, 청중을 사로잡다
J.Cole은 롤라팔루자 헤드 라이너답게 카리스마 넘치는 공연을 선보였다. 이 힙합 베테랑은 “95 South” 및 그의 가장 최근 앨범 “The Off Season”의 다른 곡들로 무대를 시작했다. J.Cole은 청중에게 몇 년 전의 롤라팔루자 공연을 떠올리게 했다. 그때 그는 언젠가 메인 무대에 오르겠다는 포부를 품은 채 사이드 무대에 섰던 것이다. 또한 J.Cole은 팬들이 1일차든 27일차든 상관없이 팬덤에 합류해 준 것에 대해 따로 시간을 내어 감사 인사를 전했다. 이 래퍼는 그의 드림빌 소속 아티스트 JID & Bas와 무대를 함께 하며 “Down Bad”, “Stick”, “100. Mil.”을 부르기도 했다.
J.Cole은 어마어마한 열정으로 청중을 흥분의 도가니에 몰아넣는다. J.Cole이 자리에 앉아 자신의 애창곡 “Love Yourz”를 부르든, “Can't Get Enough”, “Work It”, “GOMD”, “Wet Dreams”, “Power Trip” 등 예전 명곡을 부르며 운동선수 마냥 무대를 뛰어다니든, 청중은 그의 에너지에 쉽게 동화되어 어울렸다. “No Role Modelz”로 3일 차를 마감했을 때 청중은 완전히 그에게 사로잡혔다.

J-hope, 슈퍼스타임을 증명하다
BTS의 노래 제목 대로 J-hope은 다이너마이트처럼 불을 붙였다. 그룹의 명성을 감안하면 J-hope의 솔로 무대에 대략 105,000명(소속사 하이브(HYBE) 보도 자료 인용)이 몰린 것도 놀라운 일은 아니다. 19곡의 셋 리스트로 구성된 무대 내내 J-hope이 보여준 자신감과 자연스러운 스웨그, 무대 장악력은 이번이 첫 솔로 공연이라는 사실을 결코 짐작할 수 없을 정도였다. J-hope은 새 앨범 “Jack In The Box” 수록곡인 “More”, “Arson”, “Equal Signs” 등을 선보이며 BTS의 팬덤인 ‘아미(ARMY)’ 앞에서 내면의 록스타를 해방시켰다. 공연의 셋 리스트에는 “Daydream”, “항상(HANGSANG)”, “Piece of Peace” 같은 본인의 믹스테이프 “Hope World”에 수록된 노래도 포함되어 있었는데, “Piece of Peace”는 팬들이 응원봉을 흔들기에도 완벽한 곡이다. 이 한국 스타는 자신을 유명하게 만들어준 그룹 BTS에 존경을 표하며 BTS의 노래 “Just Dance”, “Cypher Part 1”, “Outro: Ego”를 불렀다. 또한 자신의 솔로곡 “치킨 누들 수프”와 BTS의 “온(ON)”을 안무한 시에나 라라우(Sienna Lalau) 등 유쾌하고 다양한 댄서들과 함께 새로운 안무를 더해 “Dynamite Tropical” 리믹스에 새로운 숨결을 불어넣었다. 또한 “What If”에서 Old Dirty Bastard에게 모자 끝을 잡고 살짝 인사를 보내고, Becky G와 함께 불렀던 “Chicken Noodle Soup”의 원곡 아티스트 DJ Webstar와 Young B의 이름을 소리쳐 부르며 음악적 토대를 마련해 준 아티스트들에게 경의를 표하기도 했다. 제이홉은 세계에서 가장 강력한 7인조 그룹의 일원이라 할 수 있겠지만 롤러팔루자 헤드라이너 공연은 그가 확실히 자신만의 위치를 가질 수 있음을 증명해 보였다.

Lollapalooza 2022 made a triumphant return to Grant Park, Chicago for four electric days in July.
J-hope, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, J.Cole, Machine Gun Kelly, Metallica, Big Sean, Green Day, and Jazmine Sullivan were the big names on the smorgasbord of a lineup, with many more topping the bill.
It was a four-day festival full of history-making highs. BTS’s J-Hope became the first South Korean artist to not only headline Lollapalooza but the first to headline a main stage at any major U.S. music festival. Tomorrow x Together, label mates with BTS, also became the first K-pop act to perform at Lolla.
Meanwhile, Pornos for Pyros fans were treated to a reunion show after the group got back together earlier this year since breaking up in 1998.
With an eclectic range of artists, the festival served as the perfect environment for guest appearances from across the music industry, with Big Sean welcoming his pregnant girlfriend Jhene Aiko and J.Cole bringing out his Dreamville artists Bas & J.I.D. J-Hope performed live for the first time with Becky G three years after their collaboration Chicken Noodle Soup came out. The likes of Tinashe, Mahalia, Sampa The Great, Sam Fender, Lil Durk (his set derailed by an injury), Eurovision champions Maneskin, and Griff made an appearance throughout the weekend.

Jazmine Sullivan Gave Us Perfect Pitch
On Thursday, Jazmine Sullivan made her Lollapalooza debut and took fans on a vocal journey that can only be described as a spiritual experience. Opening her set dressed head to toe in neon yellow, the R&B singer slyly asked the audience if “anybody ever bust some windows? Well, I did,” before transiting into her hit song “Bust Your Windows.”
The Grammy-award-winning singer won over the crowd with her powerhouse riffs, runs, monologues interpreted by backup dancers, and performing fan favourites like “On It,” “Insecure” and “Let It Burn.” Sullivan even transformed the crowd into her personal choir with an exhilarating cover of The Fugees’ classic “Killing Me Softly.” ’
Closing out her performance with Heaux Tales’ stand-out track “Pick Up Your Feelings,” Sullivan left the crowd swaying and singing in harmonies.

Tinashe Turned Up the Heat
On Friday, Tinashe gave a performance that was as hot as the weather outside. The songstress showed off her dance prowess with fun and flirty choreography throughout the entire set, which included “2 On”, “All Hands On Deck” and “Naturally” from the Deluxe version of her latest record 333. The finale “Bouncin” really turned up the heat with sexy hip thrusts, twerking on chairs, and a dance break where she -literally- made it bounce on the ground.

Dua Lipa Lights Up The Night
This was Dua Lipa’s third time at Lolla and it was clear the British singer is a pro at this by now. Her Mugler outfit was a clever costume choice as the night drew in on Friday, dazzling the packed-out crowd. Dua Lipa continues to be a popstar force to be reckoned with evidenced by fans belting out "New Rules," "Levitating," “Pretty Please,” “Good in Bed,” and "Don't Stop Now" word for word. One of the highlights of her set was when she paused to address the overturning of Roe v Wade. Dua told the crowd: "Stand up for women’s rights, stand up against racial injustice. Stand up for the LGBTQ community. Stand up for each other and I'm here to stand up for you in whatever way I can, I promise.

TXT Makes History
Tomorrow x Together made history as the first K-pop group to perform at Lollapalooza. The quintet appeared on the Solana x Perry’s stage to perform a collection of songs that included their latest title track “Good Boy Gone Bad,” “Anti-Romantic” and “Valley of Lies” alongside featuring artist Iann Dior. ” The most endearing part of the show was when Heuningkai assumed that their songs might be new to a lot of the people there. If the light sticks and TXT fans (also known as Moas) singing along and even playing the tambourine during “Magic” was anything to go by, Tomorrow x Together have successfully launched themselves on the festival scene.

J.Cole Controls the Crowd
J.Cole gave a charismatic performance, befitting of a Lollapalooza headliner. The Hip Hop veteran opened with “95 South” and a collection of other songs from his most recent album The Off Season. J.Cole reminded the crowd about his performances at the festival years prior where he performed on the side stage with aspirations of one day making it to the main stage. He also took the time to express his gratitude towards his fans at whatever time they joined his fandom – whether it was from day one or day 27. The rapper even shared the stage with his Dreamville artists J.I.D & Bas who “Down Bad,” “Stick,” and “100. Mil.”
J.Cole is a live wire who set his audience on fire. Whether he was sitting down to perform his favourite song “Love Yourz” or running across the stage like an athlete to classics “Can’t Get Enough,” “Work It”, “G.O.M.D,” “Wet Dreams,” and “Power Trip,” the crowd matched his energy with ease. By the time he closed out Day 3 with “No Role Modelz” the crowd was under his complete control.

J-hope Proves He Is a Superstar
Like the BTS song goes, J-hope lit it up like Dynamite. Given his group’s reputation, it’s no surprise that J-hope’s solo stage was attended by approximately 105,000 people (according to the press release sent out by his label HYBE). Based on the rapper’s confidence, effortless swag, and command of the stage throughout his 19 song set, one would have never guessed that this was the rapper’s first time performing alone. The rapper unleashed his inner rockstar upon ARMY showcasing songs like "More", "Arson" and "Equal Signs" from his new album Jack In The Box. The set also included songs from his mixtape Hope World such as “Daydream,” “HANGSANG” and "Piece of Peace" (the latter absolutely perfect for fans to wave their light stick). The South Korean star paid homage to the group that made his name with BTS songs "Just Dance", "Cypher Part 1" and "Outro: Ego." He also breathed new life into the “Dynamite Tropical” remix, adding new choreography with a pleasantly diverse set of dancers including Sienna Lalau who choreographed “Chicken Noodle Soup and BTS’s “ON.” A hat tip to Old Dirty Bastard on “What If” and a shout out to “DJ webstar and Young B (the originator of Chicken Noodle Soup, which he performed with Becky G) served as a musical reverence for the artists who laid a foundation for him. J-Hope may be a part of the most powerful septet in the world but headlining Lollapalooza proved that he can certainly hold his own.
