2000년대 영국 팝에 관심이 있던 사람이라면 [I Never Die], 특히 <Tomboy>에서 슈가베이브스의 히트곡 <Hole in The Head> <Freak Like Me> 레퍼런스를 읽어내는 것은 그리 어려운 일은 아닐 것이다.

어쨌거나 [I Never Die] 확실히크러시'한다

Girl Crushes Never Die but Become a Genre

Let’s talk about the girl crush. This newly coined word traces back to the Spice Girls. The moment of release of their first single, “Wannabe,” in 1996 must go down in history as the starting point of girl groups. Since the 1990s, the UK had promoted boy groups as an industry. As Boyzone and Westlife debuted following Take That, it seems like a war had broken out among boy groups across the UK. Spice Girls was a girl group created in the wake of successful boy groups. While the group was an industrial product originally designed to appeal to the male audience, it was the female audience that showed the greater response. Their record label then made the wise decision to use the phrase “girl power.” It was fairly innovative to give each of the members a superhero-like nickname and to put female confidence first, instead of their sexual attractiveness. We can certainly say that the term “girl crush” came from Spice Girls. All Saints, Sugababes, and Girls Aloud also emerged, following Spice Girls’ success strategy.

The term “girl crush” seems a bit misused in Korea. What should we call a girl crush? Is it a girl crush if you just release a song with “strong” character images? Should we call it a girl crush if it is consumed more by female fans? In most cases, it is not wrong to say that the term “girl crush” is just a short-term concept determined differently by the talent agency each time, saying “we have a girl crush concept this time” just like “we have a sexy concept this time.” In this context, (G)I-dle's first studio album, “I Never Die,” clearly shows their commitment to focusing on girl crushes and taking the lead as a girl group in this, the fourth year since their debut.

During this time, (G)I-dle has explored their identity in various ways. “DUMDi DUMDi,” the group’s biggest hit before the release of their studio album, was a dance pop song for summer that was fairly okay. Until their mini-album “I Burn,” we could not see (G)I-dle's clear direction as a girl group. Nonetheless, it was clear that the musical sense of Jeon So-yeon, who has been dubbed the next “self-producing idol” after G-Dragon, and the idol-like attractiveness of Soojin were the two driving forces behind the group. After Soojin left, the burden fell on the shoulders of Jeon So-yeon, and her direction was clearly predictable in some sense. As continuously implied in “Unpretty Rapstar” and her solo album “Windy,” she strongly pushed to be recognized as a female musician, not as a dependent female idol.

In particular, their first single, “Tomboy,” is some sort of rebellion against the traditional identity of idol groups. Jeon So-yeon, who wrote the song, brings out her story in a trendy style. Capturing the style of punk rock, which has been revived with the debut of Olivia Rodrigo, with guitar riffs in the chorus is a very trendy option, and at the same time a musical declaration that they will lead the group’s identity with the concept of “girl power” or “girl crush.” While rock serves as a declaration of their music, their lyrics “Call me a crazy bitch" and “I’m a (fucking) tomboy” are a declaration of their identity. Of course, you might say that all these things are just a commercially designed concept. If it is a commercial concept, (G)I-dle and Cube Entertainment are doing great business. Good business is important. A good idol group is created when their musical direction aligns well with a business direction.

If we mentioned only female punk rock musicians like Avril Lavigne and Olivia Rodrigo when we talk about their new album, that would tell just half the story. (G)I-dle’s biggest hits “DUMDi DUMDi” and “Tomboy” resemble the songs of British girl groups during the 90s in many respects. Given that “DUMDi DUMDi” is a “song about summer,” it clearly reflects the influence of “Pure Shore,” an All Saints’ hit, which has remained a summer hymn after it was remixed by DJ Fatboy Slim in his famous Brighton Beach festival in 2002. “I Never Die” reminds us of Sugababes, who were favored most by critics in the history of girl groups in the UK. Sugababes were popular as a girl group who demolished the traditional image of girl groups in the early 2000s. Their “Angels with Dirty Faces” aimed to be “anti-Spice Girls.” Their songs were not bubblegum pop but dance songs with strong guitar riffs from rock on top of garage, electronica, and hip hop. Anyone interested in British Pop from the 2000s can easily see references to Sugababes’ hits “Hole in the Head” and “Freak Like Me” in “I Never Die” and especially “Tomboy.”

Of course, K-pop is a genre close to being a mix of all the pop music that has ever existed on the planet. Although nothing is perfectly original, the attractiveness of a pastiche bringing back and mixing up all the historical references from pop is K-pop’s originality. (G)I-dle smartly selected attitudes and references for “I Never Die” to complete their new identity. As it remains to be seen whether they can continue to repeat this strategy, we cannot predict or assume it too early. Now is the time to enjoy this “craziest bitch-like” girl group’s new attempt. In any case, “I Never Die” is certainly “crushing.”
