(Tune Blank)

Isn't the emptiness in the aftermath? (Tune Blank)

Anticipating a promising future for Korean popular art, beginning with the appreciation of “Drive My Car”

"I can hear the silence," she said as she threw herself into the arms of the man whose gaze fixed on her unrelenting trembling. Although this doesn't sound extraordinarily special, I was immediately mesmerized. Perhaps, the scene would be more captivating if you watched it from the comfort of your home rather than in a movie theater.

This is how the Asian film, “Drive My Car” won the Oscar for the Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

Classical melodies flow without knowing whether it's a solo piece or a concerto. The sound of cars slashes over the music. The clinking and whirling bicycle passing by feels like a neighbor or a familiar rusty window frame covered with thick glass. The yellowish walled background with the laundry racks covered in hanging socks as if invisible, just like air.

These scenes and other seemingly insignificant daily routines have been shown in more depth in the award-winning Korean film “Parasite,” winning various awards beyond the Oscar for the Best International Film.

Fancy techniques are always appreciated. However, the most beautiful things can be found in our mundane daily life. I believe Asian films have a powerful way of describing these aspects in the most profound refined way. But Korean movies are unsurpassed, with the current "Hallyu" craze proving that to be true.

Let's take a deeper look at the beauty that even the Oscars couldn't help but notice.

Circumstances such as deceit to survive an unemployment crisis, having someone that one loves more than the other, or observing the actions someone takes to hide their lack of trust make us frown. However, these are not crimes beyond our comprehension. This is what ordinary life can look like. Small wrong-doings or mistakes people commit because they are human can be explicitly found in everyday life. No matter how hard we try to be righteous, we can be tempted by instinctive pleasures and daunted by realistic limitations.

How about the larger-than-life protagonists that appear on screen? While I can barely afford snacks, the well-educated protagonist from a famous university gives enormous sums of money to a friend without batting an eyelash. While I struggle with insomnia, work overtime, or complain about my domineering colleague, these protagonists with unrealistic images, find ways to finish work early. No matter how rich and famous they may be, they create an uproar if someone tries to make a move on their lover without consequences. They are never accused of murder or rape and are unscathed because they are unrealistically talented.

They are awe-inspiring, envious figures that no longer impress me. I believe no one will ever ask me why this is. But, we already know that they are unreal, having no connection with the reality of our lives.

Of course, we are curious about the protagonist's life. But we are more curious about the lives of ordinary people like us. Honestly, I wish one of us could be the hero. I want to see heroes with backgrounds similar to mine living their best lives rather than being invented to endure their shortcomings and remain realistic. One must begin with the ordinary, not fanciful, life to reflect this.

I am not saying depicting an ordinary life would impress people. Personally, I would rather focus on my own life than watch a film about someone else's life. People have a limited amount of money to spend on art. So who would want to spend their money frivolously? A masterpiece is not just any story but an account that touches another level of being. It is difficult to write a masterpiece, and not many artists can do it. Therefore, it is fair to say that it is truly inspiring what Korea has accomplished while also overcoming discrimination and various challenges.

Let's look at when Korea started achieving these heights. Korean popular art has become globalized. But before the world really began noticing, our initial appeal was built around "Seo Taiji and Boys." There were great artists, even before Seo Taiji and Boys. But this group converted simple music fans into religious fanatics with their intensely clever lyrics and melodies. Those concerned that this transformation might be corrupted by low-quality popular art, which has always existed, had their reasons for doubt because many real artists did not express their ideas so casually. But, it became a futile concern allowing the art to mature to the present day, globalized art.

BTS achieved maturity by creating their art from insightful thoughts, much like “Demian.” “Squid Game” achieved top rankings on Netflix by describing and detailing the similarities between economic power and prison, creating thought-provoking series based on “Theory of Desire” by Jacques Lacan. “Hellbound” also achieved high rankings on Netflix by sublimating natural tragedy and rationalizing through religion and art. “Grid” achieved top rankings on Disney+. Since “Grid” is the latest Korean craze, I will describe it in detail.

Grid is an impressive mini-series. It is the remarkable story of a commoner who becomes both a delightful and admirable hero. I can only describe the show as "perfect." Of course, Seo Kang-joon, in the role of Kim Sae-ha, has a magnificent personality, and his performance is epic. The character, who is the son of a janitor, starts at the lowest rank as a civil servant. He is treated like nothing more than a spare part in a massive engine, which is demoralizing for the average person. But he has long been trying to expose the truth about those who do not have a clear agenda for good. As his efforts are fruitful, he is able to revive a system that sacrifices individuals in an attempt to save humanity. Unfortunately, the plan was only favorable to a few individuals, while the rest of the world, and some of his colleagues, continued to suffer. He is a part of the limited few who enjoy the benefits but is unsure that everyone in the group has the right motive. So, he reassesses the situation because he can't overcome his conscience and faces reality.

Even though someone with good intentions may be sacrificed, can we find a well-balanced state where both the world and I are respected?

We need to hone in on the excellence of tomorrow. The most anticipated part of these rising trends may be in the morrow. The artists could answer this question. But I would like to ask those who wonder about how to really see this beauty. How would you want to use this wealth of opportunity? In art, the world is not empty without reason. The emptiness is waiting to be filled with the most beautiful melodies.
