 We have to start somewhere

History is full of innovative events and figures who mark the end of one era and the beginning of a new one. World War I is regarded by historians as the beginning of the 20th century. Likewise, many people view the current COVID-19 pandemic as the true beginning of the 21st century because it has changed our lives through digitalization, which seemed unlikely in the foreseeable future, in just two years. In much the same way, there are composers whose innovations blazed a new path in the history of Western music. Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) is arguably the most innovative composer among them.

His life and music were kaleidoscopic. As one critic said, “Stravinsky is a musician like a chameleon.” Born in Russia in 1882, Stravinsky obtained French citizenship in 1934 and American citizenship in 1945. He is considered one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Just as his nationality changed several times, his composition style was not fixed but exhibited a variety of facets as he faced ceaseless challenges and created several innovations. Stravinsky’s artistic identity can be summed up in his dismissal of Vivaldi, the composer of “The Four Seasons,” as “a person who wrote one concerto 400 times.” In particular, the premiere of The Rite of Spring at the Champs-Elysees Theater in Paris in 1913, whose innovative music sparked a riot in the audience that led the police to be called in, is remembered as the biggest scandal in classical music and a musical revolution that opened a new era.

The Firebird Suite (L'Oiseau de feu), introduced today, is one of Stravinsky’s early works. It is the first of his three great ballet pieces, combining romanticism and primitivism. It ignited a career that lifted the unknown Stravinsky to stardom. The legendary Russian choreographer Sergei Diaghilev had a plan to produce a ballet titled the Firebird based on The Firebird and the Evil Magician Koschei, a fairy tale by the writer Afanasyev, and commissioned the 28-year-old Stravinsky to compose the music. Because The Firebird originated from a traditional fairy tale, Stravinsky borrowed many Russian folk melodies and created colorful sounds with an orchestration influenced by his teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov. Moreover, the complex and dazzling modern rhythms give us an intuition that Stravinsky has opened a new era of music. The French composer Debussy, who attended the premiere of the Firebird at the Paris Opera in 1910, responded when Stravinsky asked for a review of the Firebird, “We have to start somewhere,” implying that “the new path in music” started with Stravinsky.

Inspired by the great success of the premiere, Stravinsky arranged five pieces from the music for the Firebird ballet in 1911 for orchestra. He later arranged it as a suite for performance two more times, in 1919 and 1945. As a result, there are four versions of Stravinsky’s Firebird: the 1910 ballet version and the 1911, 1919, and 1945 performance versions. Each of the three performance versions has a slightly different instrumentation and composition. Currently, the 1919 version is the most widely played, and it is composed of the following parts:

“Introduction – The Firebird and its dance – The Firebird’s variation – The Princesses’ Khorovod (Rondo, round dance) – Infernal dance of King Kashchei – Lullaby – Finale”

Some have criticized Stravinsky, who had a keen eye for money and economy, for his frequent arrangements symbolized by the four versions of the Firebird suite, and for his attempts to secure copyrights for the different versions. Interestingly, the short, intense orchestral tutti in “The Infernal dance of King Kashchei” was later sampled as the “Orchestra Hit” sound for the synthesizer, an electronic instrument, and is widely used in pop music even now. Artists from Michael Jackson to Bruno Mars have used it often, and examples of its use in Korean songs include “I Know” and “Hayeoga” by Seo Taiji and Boys.
