Genius Vocalist and Producer, Maktub

When talking about incredible vocal talent, we shouldn't leave out Maktub. His vocal range is remarkable and rivaled by even the best singer. We can see how much he works on his technique. But it's not enough to talk about his vocal talent when describing him. He is also a gifted singer-songwriter and producer who wrote all the music and lyrics for his hit songs. That's why he is able to tell his stories through music.

Rolling Stone Korea invited this artist, who has shown fans he has no limits when he shares his stories, to an interview. Let's let these serious yet philosophical stories unfold now.

Hello, Maktub. It's nice meeting you in this interview with Rolling Stone Korea. First, please introduce yourself, and say hello.

Hello. I'm Maktub, and I make music.

When introducing your new album "Red Moon: Beyond the Light," you said, " When we reach paradise, we become eternity in the time and space of you and me." What does "paradise" mean here?

It's only a word I use to describe my emotions. So, there's not a clear definition. But if I were to describe it, I would say that it's a place I want to reach. It's a place that results from a person's beliefs. So, for some, that might be hope. For another comfort, or it might be like the Garden of Eden.

While writing the music and lyrics for your new song, "The Eternal Moment," which part did you focus on?

I wanted to write a song that the listeners, and myself, would like to listen to for the rest of our lives. I completed the piece by revising and polishing every part of the melody and every lyric repeatedly. I thought people might get tired of it quickly if the sound was over-the-top. So I removed the excessive Hi-Fi EQ that could be laboring to one's ears and tried to capture the warm sounds you get from analog consoles and reel tapes.

We're sure you're disappointed as you could not meet with fans as much due to COVID-19. What's the first thing you want to do once the pandemic issue subsides?

I interact with my fans a lot online through radio, social media, and YouTube content. I haven't felt that I haven't been able to interact with my fans. (Laugh) So, I would want to go on vacation. My goals over the past ten years were to pursue something and improve myself. Now, my thoughts are of living a life that doesn't actively pursue anything. Maybe then, my music and I can become freer.

What would you say is the secret to singing well?

I don't think I am qualified to answer such a question. But, I think it's the same as working out. Whatever it is, once you get the hang of it, give it your all. You're bound to improve. Nowadays, people are so focused on some kind of secret method or solution that they forget the essentials. But training and 100 percent practice improve your skills. A person who sings a song 100 times or 1,000 times will sing that song better than a person who has only sung it ten times no matter what. So sing a lot. It's the reason so many incredible singers were active in the 1980-1990s. I think vocalists these days are distracted. There are so many fun things in today's world that their attitude and focus towards music tend to be lacking. The more time and energy you invest, the higher the chances are to be successful.
