챈슬러(Chancellor)는 힙합퍼 사이에서는 이미 실력파로 통하는 뮤지션이다. 현재 소속사 커넥트엔터테이먼트와 연결되기 전에도 그는 이미 팔로알토, 산이, 비프리, 버벌진트, 도끼 등 내로라하는 힙합 아티스트들과의 협업 앨범으로 유명했다. 그는 새로운 소속사를 찾고 난 후 색다른 변화를 보이기 시작했다. 싱잉에 이어 전곡 작사, 작곡, 편곡 그리고 프로듀싱에까지 참여하며 그야말로 올라운더로 거듭난 것이다. 그래서 5년간 준비하여 선보인 정규앨범이 더 가치가 있는지 모른다.
안녕하세요, 챈슬러 님! 만나서 반갑습니다! 롤링스톤 코리아와의 인터뷰에 앞서 자기소개와 인사를 해 주시길 부탁드리겠습니다.
안녕하세요, 셀프 타이틀 앨범 [Chancellor]로 오랜만에 인사드리는 아티스트 겸 프로듀서 챈슬러입니다. 반갑습니다.
지난 8월 커넥트엔터테인먼트의 새 식구가 되셨어요. 어떤 점이 챈슬러 님을 커넥트로 이끌었나요?
우선 강다니엘과는 앨범 작업을 하면서 처음 인연을 맺었는데, 그때부터 쭉 교류하면서 다른 회사 식구들과도 가까워졌어요. 함께 이야기를 나누다 보니 공통점이 많이 보이기 시작했던 것 같아요. 회사 사람들 그리고 분위기가 밝아서 좋았고 무엇보다 여기 커넥트의 긍정적인(positive) 에너지가 저를 이끌지 않았나 싶어요.
강다니엘 님과는 그의 첫 번째 미니앨범 [CYAN]에서 함께하셨는데, 함께 작업한 프로듀서로서 강다니엘 님은 어떤 아티스트였나요?
그동안 많은 아이돌과 작업해 보았는네, 특히 다니엘에게 인상 깊었던 점을 말하자면 자기가 원하는 디렉션이 무엇인지 너무나 뚜렷하게 알고 있다는 거예요. 나이에 비해 성숙한 프로페셔널 워크 마인드를 지니고 있었습니다. 그런데 또 어떨 땐 장난기도 많고 재미있게 일하는 아티스트예요.
2020년, 핫한 R&B 뮤지션들이 협업한 프로젝트 곡 <AUTOMATIC>의 반응이 정말 뜨거웠어요. 각자 솔로로 활동하던 아티스트들과 함께 한 곡을 완성하는 것은 어떤 경험이었는지, 그리고 다양한 색채를 지닌 아티스트들과 한 곡을 완성하기 위해 특히나 신경 썼던 부분이 있었다면 무엇이었는지요?
감사하게도 많은 분이 참여해 주셔서 너무 즐거웠고, 새로운 도전을 한다는 데에 큰 의미를 두었던 것 같아요. 신기하게도 모든 아티스트가 공감했던 것은 ‘왜 이런 R&B 프로젝트가 여태 없었나, 누군가 이런 걸 만들어줬으면 좋았겠다’고 생각한 부분이었어요. 다행히 좋은 타이밍에 같은 마음을 가진 아티스트들이 뭉쳐서 더욱 행복한 작업이었고요. 가장 신경 썼던 부분은 아무래도 곡의 흐름이었던 거 같아요. 다들 목소리와 느낌이 다르기 때문에 한 곡에 보컬 27명을 어떻게 어레인지할지, 어떤 다이내믹을 보여줄지를 가장 많이 고심했습니다. 결과는 너무나 만족스러웠고요.

After Five Long Years, The All-Rounder, Chancellor, Returns in Style
Chancellor is recognized as a talented musician among hip hop artists. Before joining his current company KONNECT Entertainment, he was famous for collaborating with some of the best hip hop artists, including Paloalto, San E, Verbal Jint, and Dok2. Chancellor started making some changes after joining KONNECT Entertainment. He has grown to become an all-rounder who not only raps but also sings and writes music and lyrics, does arrangements, and produces all of his tracks. That’s why after five years in the making, the release of his new full-length album was worth the wait.

Hello, subscribers of Rolling Stone Korea. It’s artist and producer Chancellor here, back again with my self-titled album, “Chancellor.” It’s nice to meet you.
In August, you became a new member of KONNCET Entertainment. What was it about KONNCET Entertainment that inspired you to join them?
I first met Kang Daniel while working on his album. Since then, I’ve grown a bond with him and the company staff. While talking with everyone, I found that we have a lot in common. I also like the vibrant energy of the people and the positive energy of KONNECT.
You worked with Kang Daniel on his first EP, “CYAN.” As a producer working with him, how was he as an artist?
I’ve worked with many idols. But something that impressed me about Daniel was that he clearly knew what kind of directions he wanted. His work ethics were very professional and mature. But at the same time, he’s an artist that jokes around a lot and has fun working.
In 2020, the hype for the project track “AUTOMATIC,” in which you collaborated with the most popular R&B musicians, was incredible. What was the experience like, completing a song with so many solo artists? What were some things in particular that you paid attention to completing the track with so many artists with different musical styles?
I had so much fun with so many artists who participated in the song. I think that taking on a new challenge itself was pretty meaningful. Interestingly enough, all the artists wondered why this kind of R&B project had never been made before. They had been hoping that someone would start such a project. I had a great time working on the project with artists who shared the same vision. The part I paid attention to the most was the flow of the song. Everyone’s voice and vibes were different. So, I really mulled over how to arrange 27 vocals in one piece and what kind of dynamic I wanted to show. The result was very gratifying.
