자신들만의 스타일을 정립하는 ATEEZ


4대세 아이돌 그룹이 어떻게 전 세계를 강타하고 있을까. 한 번에 한 도시씩.

 

무대 위에서든 화면에서든, ATEEZ는 어떻게 자신들을 표현해야 하는지를 알고 있다.  그리고 그게 아마도 팬들이 ATEEZ에 열광하는 이유일 것이다. 시선을 사로잡았던 ‘MAMA 2019’ 무대 위에서, 그리고 아이돌 그룹들이 경쟁하는 Mnet의 <킹덤 : 레전더리 워> 에서의 경쟁 무대에서도, ATEEZ의 여덟 멤버, 홍중, 성화, 윤호, 여상, 산, 민기, 우영, 종호는 여전히 우리의 시선을 사로잡는다.

중독성 있는 노래, 시선을 끄는 뮤직 비디오 컨셉, 그리고 파워풀한 퍼포먼스를 모두 갖춘 ATEEZ는 차세대 K-pop 그룹들 중 가장 기대되는 그룹 중 하나이다. 그리고 ATEEZ가 아직 KQ Fellaz라는 이름으로 활동하던 2018년에 래퍼 Famous Dex의 <Pick It Up>에 맞춰 공연한 그 유명한 프리 데뷔 영상을 누가 잊을 수 있을까.

ATEEZ는 2018년 가온 앨범 차트에서 7위까지 올랐던 데뷔곡 <해적왕>과 <Treasure>로 가요계에 혜성같이 나타난 이래 계속해서 인기를 얻으며 강력한 입지를 구축해 왔다. 2022년 현재, 인종과 성별, 나이를 초월하는 다양한 그룹으로 구성된 팬덤을 거느리고, 다수의 수상 경력 (MTV EMA Best Korean Act 부문 수상 포함), 그리고 최근 발매한 EP [ZERO : FEVER EPILOGUE]로 빌보드 월드 앨범 차트에서 1위를 차지한 ATEEZ의 여덟 멤버는 이제 코로나 19로 인한 팬데믹 이후 처음으로 월드 투어의 여정을 시작했다. 

1월 7일 서울에서부터 시작된 “THE FELLOWSHIP : BEGINNING OF THE END” 투어는 ATEEZ 멤버들의 수 년간의 꾸준한 땀과 노력의 결정체로, 여덟 멤버는 20,300명을 수용하는 파리의 Accor Arena와 같이 세계 각지의 유명 공연장에서 투어를 이어가고 있다. ATEEZ는 런던에서의 Wembley 콘서트를 앞두고 롤링스톤 코리아와의 인터뷰에서 자신들의 음악적 발전, 가장 좋아하는 퍼포먼스, 그리고 뮤지션 해리 스타일스로부터 받은 영감에 관해 이야기했다.

1. [나타샤] 처음을 떠올려 볼까요? 여러분들이 연습생일 때 받은 영감은 무엇이고, 지금도 여전히 같은 영감을 받고 있나요?

민기: 저희가 연습생이었을 때는 서로에게서 많은 영감을 받았고 또 저희가 존경하는 선배 뮤지션 분들께도 영감을 많이 받았어요. 그리고 데뷔한 후로는 저희만의 음악을 더 많이 보여드리고 싶은 욕심이 있기 때문에 자기 자신으로부터의 영감을 더 많이 받고자 하고 있어요.

홍중: 그래서 데뷔 전에는 민기가 말했듯이, 저희 멤버들이 서로에게 큰 영감을 주었어요. 하지만 데뷔 이후에는 팬들이 저희에게 동기를 부여하고 있어요. 왜냐하면 팬분들은 항상 저희를 응원해 주시니까요. 그게 바로 저희가 더 능력을 개발하고 더 좋은 음악을 만들 수 있는 이유입니다. 

2. [나타샤] 음악적으로는 어떻게 발전하고 있나요? 특히 투어의 경우 상당히 많은 에너지가 필요로 하는데요. 투어준비는 어떻게 하고 있나요?

윤호: 저희가 연습생이었을 때부터 무대위에서 오랜 시간을 버틸 수 있어야 한다는 걸 알고 있었어요. 일을 할 때는 에너지가 넘쳐야 하기 때문에, 매 공연과 콘서트 마다 항상 에너지 넘치게 하고 있어요. 무대에서는 더 좋은 모습을 보여드려야 하기 때문에 더 열심히 해야 하고, 사람들과 상호작용하는 방법, 그리고 동시에 더 재밌고 멋진 무대를 보여드려야 하기 때문에 열심히 해야 해요. 결국 모든 것은 우리의 안과 밖에서 발견할 수 있는 거죠. 

산: 저희 입장에서는 월드 투어를 하는 것이 실제로 능력을 키울 수 있는 기회가 됐어요. 왜냐하면 쇼가 끝난 후에 정말 많은 영상을 볼 수 있기 때문이죠. 그렇기 때문에 저희가 안무나 노래를 모니터하고 무대에서 부족했던 점은 고칠 수가 있어요. 

3. [나타샤] 월드 투어를 제외하고 지금까지 했던 공연 중에 어떤 무대를 보고 “우와, 우리 진짜 잘했네?”하고 생각했는지 말씀해 주실 수 있나요? 

산: <킹덤 : 레전더리 워>에서 두 번째로 했던 ‘리듬타(The Awakening of Summer)’ 무대요.

민기: <KCON 2019 NY>에서 저희가 트래비스 스캇의 <Sicko Mode>를 커버했던 무대였어요. 

4. [나타샤] 팬들에게 정말로 보여주고 싶던 노래 중 공연 셋업리스트에 들어가지 못한 노래가 있나요? 

우영: 제가 생각했을 때 리스트에 포함되었으면 좋았을 것 같은 노래는 <Dazzling Light>요. 퍼포먼스가 정말 좋았거든요. 

여상: 저희 두 번째 미니앨범 곡 중에 <Light>라는 곡이 굉장히 부드럽고 저녁 분위기에 딱 맞는 곡이에요. 그리고 저희 콘서트가 저녁에 열리니까 이 곡을 추가하면 좋을 것 같아요. 

5. [나타샤] 무대를 준비할 때 다른 아티스트의 무대를 보고, 우와, 나도 저렇게 하고 싶다고 생각하는 무대가 있나요? 

성화: 저희가 콘서트에서 Maddox (ATEEZ와 같은 KQ 소속사 아티스트)와 함께 공연해요. Maddox가 콘서트에서 노래를 할 거예요. 그리고 Maddox가 노래하는 걸 들으면서 제가 생각했던 거는, “아, 나도 Maddox만큼 노래를 잘 했으면 좋겠다” 였어요. 

홍중: 저희가 영국으로 다시 가게 될 거란 소식을 들었을 때, 저는 데이비드 보위의 뮤직 비디오를 다시 봤어요. 그리고 저도 언젠가는 그런 분위기의 무대를 하고 싶어요. 언젠가는 그런 패션과 분위기를 시도해 보고 싶어요.

민기: 저는 최근에 해리 스타일스의 코첼라 무대를 봤어요. 등장부터 엄청났어요. 그런 분위기와 스타일이 제가 정말 해보고 싶은 거예요. 


 

6. [나타샤] ATEEZ의 팬들에게 듣기로는 일부 멤버들이 The Lab의 Sienna에게 LA에서 댄스 레슨을 받고 있다고 하던데요. 투어를 위해서 새로운 댄스 스타일을 배운 게 있나요? 

우영: 저희가 LA에 있을 때, Sienna한테 수업을 들었는데 굉장히 파워풀하고 힙한 스타일이었어요. Sienna와 함께 한 시간은 정말로 즐거웠는데, 다같이 댄스 레슨을 받은 게 정말로 오랜만이었기 때문이었어요. 그 시간이 LA에 연습하러 오기 전의 아주 오래 전의 시간들을 떠올리게 했어요. 그래서 너무 멋진 경험이었습니다. 

7. [나타샤] ATEEZ의 다음 음악은 언제 나오나요? 다음 번에는 어떤 걸 기대해 볼 수 있을까요? 

홍중: 모르겠어요. 아마 알고 있을 텐데. 근데 말할 수가 없어요 (웃음). 스타일이나 모든 것들이 우리 ATINY들이 보고 싶어하는 것들이라는 건 말씀드릴 수 있어요. 

8. [나타샤] ATEEZ 노래 중에 “멋(The Real)”의 가사를 보면, “이게 바로 멋인 기라”라는 가사가 있잖아요. 멋, 좋은 스타일을 어떻게 정의하시나요? 

산: 제 생각에는 진짜 멋이라는 건 겸손하고 사람들에게 친절하게 행동하는 것 같아요. 내면에서 나오는 모든 것들이야 말로 사람을 진짜로 멋지게 만드는 거죠. 

9. [나타샤] 대중들이 ATEEZ에 관해서 알았으면 하는 건 어떤 게 있나요? 

여상: 저는 사람들이 ATEEZ의 무대를 보고, “진짜 멋지다, 무대 끝내준다, 100% 다 쏟아부었네, 에너지가 넘치네.”라고 생각했으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 무대 밖에서는, 무대 위에서의 모습과 달리 사랑스럽고 귀엽다고 봐주셨으면 좋겠어요. 

민기: 제가 원하는 건 사람들이 저희가 무대 위에 있는 걸 보고, “정말 멋지고, 좋고, 다시 보고 싶다”고 생각하는 거예요. 

10. [나타샤] ATEEZ에 관해서 들었던 가장 좋았던 칭찬은 무엇인가요? 

윤호: 제가 듣고 정말로 자랑스러웠던 칭찬은 바로, “우리가 모든 곳을 둘러보고, 다른 어떤 곳을 찾아봐도, ATEEZ 같은 팀은 어디에도 없다”는 것이었어요. 

홍중: 저는 어디서 이런 코멘트를 본 적 있어요. “그들을 따라하고 싶다.” 그게 정말 멋진 말이었어요. 

11. [나타샤] 2022년의 목표는 무엇인가요? 

성화: 팬데믹 기간 동안에는 저희가 팬들을 만나거나 소통할 수가 없었잖아요. 그래서 저는 팬들과 만날 수 있는 기회를 더 많이 갖고, 저희 음악을 더 많이 보여드리고 싶어요. 

홍중: 새 앨범이나 곡이 나오게 되면 저희 팬들이 그 동안 오래 기다리셨기 때문에 정말 좋아하실 거라고 생각해요. 그게 올해 제 목표입니다. 

12. [나타샤] 런던은 어떤 도시인 것 같나요?

ATEEZ: 멋지고 로맨틱하죠. 

홍중: 저희가 런던을 배경으로 하는 영화를 많이 보고 영국 아티스트들을 정말 좋아하기 때문에, 저는 런던이 무척 친숙하게 느껴져요. 아시다시피 사람들이 말하길 날씨가 정말… 

[나타샤] 끔찍하죠.

홍중: 네 (웃음), 거의 매일 비가 오죠. 그렇지만 저는 그게 좋아요. 

13. 마지막으로 하고 싶은 말이 있나요? 

산: ATINY 여러분, 건강하고 행복하세요.

Whether on stage or through a screen, ATEEZ knows how to make a statement and maybe that’s why fans can’t get enough of them. Whether it’s stealing the show at MAMA 2019, or competing on the Mnet competition show “Kingdom : Legendary War” –  there is no denying that the group’s eight members Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho are captivating.

The combination of catchy songs, interesting music video concepts, and powerful performances has made them one of the most exciting groups to watch in this new generation of K-pop. Also, who can forget their iconic pre-debut performance video to ‘Pick It Up’ by rapper Famous Dex in 2018 when they still went under the name KQ Fellaz (named after their parent company KQ Entertainment) that circulated across Twitter.

ATEEZ has established themselves as a force to be reckoned with ever since they exploded onto the music scene with their debut songs ‘Pirate King’ and ‘Treasure’, which peaked at number seven on the Gaon Album in 2018. Now, in 2022, with a rainbow legion of fans transcending race, gender, and age, a couple of awards under their belt (including an MTV EMA for Best Korean Act) and a #1 spot on Billboard's World Album chart for their latest EP “ZERO : FEVER EPILOGUE,” the eight-man group has embarked on their first arena world tour since the beginning of the pandemic.

“THE FELLOWSHIP : BEGINNING OF THE END” tour, which started on 7th January in Seoul, has been the amalgamation of years of consistency and hard work that now has the octet performing in venues such as Accor Arena in Paris, which a seating capacity of 20,300. ATEEZ spoke to Rolling Stone Korea ahead of their Wembley concerts in London about their artistic development, favorite performances, and getting inspiration from Harry Styles. 

1. [Natasha] Let’s go back, shall we? What inspired you when you were trainees and are those inspirations the same now?

Mingi: When we were trainees we got a lot of inspiration from each other and other artists that we were looking up but now we want to show more of our own music. So we're working more on inspiration within ourselves.

Hongjoong: So before debut, as Mingi already said, the members are big inspirations for each other. But after our debut, our fans are the motivation for us because they were always cheering for us. That's why we have to develop our abilities and make better music.

2. [Natasha] How do you develop artistically? Especially for a tour because it involves a lot of stamina. How do you prepare for that?

Yunho: From the time we were trainees, we knew we have to be able to be on stage for a long time. You have to work on your stamina, so we work a lot on that for every performance and concert.  We have to work harder on stage to have the right manners and then how to interact with the person and make it a little bit more fun and entertaining as well. So it's all within inside and outside.

San: For us, it's really been a chance to develop our ability during the world tour because we can see many videos after a show. That's why we can monitor our choreography or our singing and we can fix something lacking on the stage.

3. [Natasha] Could you tell me what performance you've done so far outside of the tour where you look back and thought: “Yeah, we really killed that?”

San: Our second stage '리듬타 (The Awakening of Summer)' on "Kingdom: Legendary War."

Mingi: Our performance on 'KCON 2019 NY' where we did a dance cover of Travis Scott's ‘Sicko Mode.’

4. [Natasha] Are there any songs that didn't make the setlist that you would have really liked to show the fans?

Wooyoung: I felt like a song that would have been great if it was added to the setlist would have been ‘Dazzling Light’ because the performance was really great.

Yeosang: There's a song on our second mini-album called “Light” a very smooth song that matches the evening atmosphere. And since our concerts are during the evenings that would be a good addition.

 

5. [Natasha] When preparing for the stage are there any performances from other artists that you watch and think wow, I want to do that?

Seonghwa: Maddox [their KQ labelmate] is playing together with ATEEZ during the concert. He will be singing during the concert. And while he was singing I was like: “Oh, I wish I could like sing as good as Maddox.”

Hongjoong: When we heard that we will be going back to the UK, I watched David Bowie's music videos again and I want to make that kind of atmosphere on the stage someday. I want to try that kind of fashion and vibes someday.

Mingi: I recently watched the Coachella stage of Harry Styles. His entrance was so grandiose. That atmosphere and style is something really want to try.

6. [Natasha] I heard from your fans that some of you were taking dance lessons in LA from Sienna from The Lab. Have you learned any new dance styles for the tour?  

Wooyoung: So when we were in LA, we got classes from Siena and the style was very powerful and very hip. It was a really fun time with her because it was the first time in a long time we got dance classes altogether. It reminded us of the old times before when we came for practice in LA. So that was a great experience.

7. [Natasha] When is the music coming out? And what can we expect from the next era?

Hongjoong: I don't know. Maybe I know. But I can't say [laughing]. I can say the style and everything will be what Atiny wants to see. 

8. [Natasha] In your song ‘The Real’ you have a lyric where you say “this is what we call style.” How do you define good style?

San: I think the real style is being humble and kind to people. It’s all the things that come from inside is what makes you stylish. 

9. [Natasha] What do you want the general public to know about ATEEZ?

Yeosang: I wish that when people see ATEEZ on stage to think: “they are very cool, they rocked the performance they did, they give 100%, and they're very energetic. And outside of the stage, I wish that people see us as lovely and cute as opposed to our on-stage persona.

Mingi: What I want is that when people see us on stage they think “They're really cool, good and we want to see them again.”

10. [Natasha] What's the best compliment that you have heard about ATEEZ?

Yunho: The best compliment that I’m really proud of is hearing: “we can look everywhere, they look all over the place but there is no team like ATEEZ.”

Hongjoong: I saw a comment somewhere saying: “I want to follow them.” That's a really cool comment. 

11. [Natasha] What is the goal for 2022?

Seonghwa: During the pandemic, we couldn’t meet the fans or interact with them and I wish we will have had more opportunities to meet with the fans, and also to show more of our music.

Hongjoong: If our new album or new song comes out, I want our fans who have been waiting so long, to really love it. That's my goal for this year. 

12. [Natasha] What do you think of London? 

ATEEZ: Cool and romantic

Hongjoong: We watch many movies with London in them and I love many artists in the UK so here feels so familiar to me. You know they said the weather is really…

[Natasha] Horrible.

Hongjoong: Yeah [laughing], rainy almost every day. But I like that.
 

13. [Natasha] Is there anything else you want to tell me like before we go?

San: ATINY, don't get sick and be happy.
