트와이스가 글로벌 영향력을 지속적으로 확대하고 있는 가운데, 멤버 미나·사나·모모가 유닛 미사모로서 새로운 이정표를 세우며 화려한 성과를 거두고 있다.
 

(인터뷰 날짜를 기준으로) 2025년 10월 데뷔 10주년을 앞두고, 트와이스(TWICE)는 두 장의 앨범을 발매하고 여섯 번째 월드 투어를 시작했으며, 미국 시카고에서 열린 롤라팔루자 페스티벌(Lollapalooza Festival)의 헤드라이너로 무대에 올랐다. 또한 그동안의 추억을 담은 다큐멘터리 영화 <원 인 어 밀리언(ONE IN A MILL10N)>을 공개하고, 넷플릭스 영화 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스(KPop Demon Hunters)>와 협업하고, 콜드플레이와도 협업하며 국제적인 인지도를 더욱 쌓았다.

2026년 2월 4일, 트와이스의 일본인 멤버들로만 이뤄진 유닛 ‘미사모(MISAMO)’는 공식 데뷔 후 3년도 채 되지 않은 시점에 일본 팬들을 위한 첫 정규 앨범 [PLAY(플레이)]를 발매한다. [PLAY]가 파티 초대장을 의미한다면, 타이틀곡 <Confetti(컨페티)>는 드레스를 입고, 즐길 시간을 기다리면서 주최 측에게 보내는 최종 참석 확인(RSVP)을 의미한다.

1월 중순 공개된 <Confetti>는 브로드웨이 뮤지컬, 클래식 할리우드 영화, 그리고 위트 있는 애니메이션 요소를 반영한 치밀한 연출의 뮤직비디오와 함께 선보이며, 미사모가 앨범 전체를 공개하기 전 분위기를 끌어올리는 경쾌한 축하의 순간을 만들어냈다. 미나, 사나, 모모는 그동안 개인 활동과 더불어, 미사모의 이전 미니 앨범 [Masterpiece]와 [HAUTE COUTURE]를 통해 절제된 화려함과 세련된 이미지를 구축해 왔지만, <Confetti>에서는 특유의 품격을 유지하면서도 더욱 솔직하고 밝은 매력을 보여준다. 금관악기 사운드와 스윙 풍 코러스를 통해 세 멤버의 즐거운 에너지가 자연스럽게 드러난다.

모모는 앨범 [PLAY]의 화려한 콘셉트에 대해 “지금까지는 세련되고 성숙한 분위기의 곡들이 많았지만, 이번에는 미사모의 또 다른 모습을 보여주고 싶었어요”라고 말한다. 

이어 “팬분들도 밝고 경쾌한 노래를 즐기실 것 같아서, 그런 방향으로 결정하게 됐습니다”라고 덧붙인다.

그러나,  [PLAY]는 단 하룻밤만 즐기고 끝나는 특별한 이벤트가 아니라, 여러 개의 무대가 연이어 펼쳐지는 대형 페스티벌에 더 가깝다.

어떤 무대에서는 세 멤버가 함께하는 세련되고 극적인 그룹 곡들을 만날 수 있고, 또 다른 무대에서는 각 멤버가 자신의 스포트라이트를 직접 이끄는 솔로 부스가 펼쳐진다.

이번 정규 앨범은 2023년 미니앨범 <Do not touch>의 은근하게 달아오르는 R&B 사운드, 2024년 곡 <Identity>에서 보여준 탄탄한 구성력, 그리고 2025년 영화 <Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist’s Journey>의 OST <Message>까지, 미사모의 이전 순간들을 하나로 엮어낸다. 그 결과, 이 앨범은 회고록 같은 성격과 동시에 새로운 캔버스를 펼쳐 보이는 작품으로 완성됐다. 기존에 공개된 싱글들과 신곡들을 함께 담아낸 이번 앨범을 통해, 미사모는 자신들의 음악적 스펙트럼과 성장 과정을 보여주는 선별된 곡 구성으로 [PLAY]를 유닛의 강력한 커리어 선언작으로 제시한다.

한편 모모의 솔로곡 <Kitty>는 장난기 가득하고 익살스러운 공연처럼 펼쳐진다. 달콤하면서도 살짝 비틀린 반전이 매력적인 곡이다.

모모는 “처음 이 곡을 들었을 때 멋지면서도 약간 키치한(과장된) 느낌이 들어서, 귀여운 요소를 더하면 재미있겠다고 생각했어요. 그래서 ‘Kitty(키티)’라는 콘셉트가 나오게 됐죠”라고 설명한다.

이어 웃으며 “집을 불태우는 ‘헬로키티’의 비공식 AI 생성 이미지를 보고서 영감받았어요. 귀엽지만 전혀 예상 못 한 모습이었거든요”라고 이야기한다.

곡의 끊임없이 변화하는 사운드처럼, 모모는 <Kitty>의 안무 역시 초반에는 팬들이 따라 하기 쉬운 간단한 동작에서 시작해, 후반부에는 더욱 강렬한 ‘힙합 바이브’로 전환된다고 귀띔했다. 그는 “대비가 핵심이에요”라고 전한다.

무대 위에서 트와이스의 메인 댄서이자 미우미우(miu miu) 앰배서더로서 쿨한 매력을 보여주는 모모와 달리, 미나는 모모를 “뭐든지 건드려서 넘어뜨리는 정말 산만한 고양이 같아요. 모모는 깜짝깜짝 잘 놀라거든요”라고 표현한다. 이에 사나는 웃으며 “눈을 잠깐만 돌리면 간식을 몰래 챙겨 먹고 말썽을 부리는 작은 사고뭉치일 거예요”라고 덧붙인다.

<Ma Cherry>는 이번 앨범에서 사나의 솔로 무대를 장식하는 곡이자, A&R 과정에서 그녀의 아티스트적 직감을 사로잡은 노래다. 간사이 출신인 사나는 “후보곡으로 여러 곡을 받았는데, 이 곡이 가장 먼저 마음에 와닿았어요. 무대와 퍼포먼스 장면도 아주 선명하게 그려져서 특히 더 끌렸죠”라고 밝힌다.

사나는 80~90년대 힙합 요소가 가미된 경쾌한 팝 곡들 속에서 “I put the cherry on top, Ma Cherry on top(깊이를 더한 나의 매력을 살며시 얹어, 마지막에 ‘나 다움’이라는 이름의 체리를 올려)”이라는 가사를 사랑스럽게 읊조린다.

이에 대해 미나는 사나를 표현하는 과일로 사과를 꼽으며 “상큼하고 달콤하면서 몸에도 좋고, 거의 모두가 좋아하는 과일이잖아요”라고 말한다.

모모는 “사나가 라즈베리를 정말 좋아하거든요” 라며 라즈베리를 닮았다고 꼽았고, “항상 달콤한 향의 향수를 뿌려요”라고 덧붙인다.

<Turning Tables>는 미나의 목소리를 더욱 차갑고 카리스마 있는 질감으로 끌어올리는 곡이다. 미나는 이 녹음 과정이 “도전적이었다”라고 말했지만, 그 결과 미사모의 막내 멤버인 그녀는 커리어에서 가장 강렬한 음악적 순간 중 하나를 만들어냈다.

미나는 “이전 앨범의 제 솔로곡 <Misty>는 아련한 분위기였고, 트와이스 최신 앨범에 수록된 솔로곡 <STONE COLD>는 더 어두운 곡이었어요. 그래서 이번에는 다른 걸 해보고 싶었죠”라고 말한다. 이어 “힙하고 쿨한 느낌의 곡을 선택했어요. 저에게는 새로운 스타일이었기 때문에 녹음이 특히 더 어려웠어요”라고 덧붙인다.

<Turning Tables>의 쿨하고 자신감 넘치는 분위기 속, 곡의 중간 부분에는 “I lift up people around me(나는 주변 사람들을 북돋아주죠)”라는 따뜻한 가사가 담겨 있다. 그리고 멤버들에 따르면, 이 가사는 특히 미나를 잘 표현한 문장이라고 한다.

사나는 “제가 어떤 결정을 해야 할 때 미나에게 물어보면, ‘이렇게 해보는 것도 있지 않을까?’라며 또 다른 관점을 제시해 줘요. 항상 상대방을 배려해 주기 때문에, 저를 차분하고 편안하게 줍니다”라고 말한다.

모모는 “연습생 시절에 미나와 많은 시간을 함께 보냈어요. 힘든 시기였지만, 항상 서로를 응원하면서 같이 이겨냈죠”라고 덧붙인다.

[PLAY]는 각 멤버의 솔로 곡들이 멤버 서로를 향한 축하의 건배처럼 느껴지도록 한 앨범으로, 음악적으로 잘 어울릴 뿐만 아니라 인간적인 차원에서도 깊이 공감할 수 있는 곡들로 채워져 있다.

Cue the confetti because Mina, Sana and Momo are hitting new milestones as a sub-unit as TWICE continue to grow a global footprint.

Before TWICE celebrated their 10-year anniversary in October 2025, the beloved girl group released two albums, kicked off their sixth world tour, headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago, dropped a documentary, and grew their international acclaim by collaborating with Coldplay and Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters. Now, in 2026, members MINA, SANA and MOMO are ensuring this year is just as toast-worthy as the last with their work as MISAMO.

On February 4, 2026, the TWICE sub-unit releases PLAY, their first full album for the Japan market, less than three years after their official debut. If PLAY is a party invitation, "Confetti" would be the final RSVP as a beauty in a dress who knows how to have fun. 

Released mid-January with a tightly staged music video that honors elements of Broadway musicals, classic Hollywood films, and whimsical animation, “Confetti” serves as the crisp, celebratory moment before MISAMO unleashes the record in full. While MINA, SANA and MOMO have established a measured glamour and sophistication throughout their careers and in MISAMO's past Masterpiece and HAUTE COUTURE mini albums, "Confetti" lets them burst with an unabashed brightness, keeping their signature polish while letting their joy leak into brassy, swing-inspired choruses. 

“Up until now, we’ve had a lot of sophisticated, mature songs, but this time we wanted to show a different side of MISAMO,” MOMO says of PLAY's sparkly single. "We also thought ONCE would enjoy something upbeat, so that’s why we went with it."

But PLAY isn’t a one-night-only exclusive; it’s more like a big festival with lots of different stages. 

On some stages, you’ll find the trio’s refined, dramatic group numbers; on others, solo booths where each member controls her own spotlight.

The LP stitches together earlier MISAMO moments — the simmering R&B of 2023 Mini Album “Do Not Touch" and the structural confidence of “Identity” from 2024, and "Message," the OST to 2025 movie Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey — so the album reads as both an anthology and a new canvas. Collecting these previously released singles alongside fresh tracks, MISAMO frames PLAY as a strong career statement for the unit with a catalog curated to present their range and trajectory. 

Meanwhile, MOMO’s “Kitty” plays like a playful, cheeky act — sweet with a subversive twist. "When I first heard the track, it sounded cool and a little kitschy, so I thought it’d be fun to bring in something cute, so that’s where ‘Kitty’ came from," she explains, before adding with a laugh, "I was also inspired by unofficial, AI-generated images of ‘Hello Kitty’ burning a house down; cute but totally unexpected."

Similar to the song's ever-changing production, MOMO teases a "Kitty" choreography that shifts from simple, fan-friendly moves to a harder "hip-hop vibe" in the second half, noting that "contrast is the key." But for as cool as the miu miu ambassador looks on stage as one of TWICE's main dancers, MINA imagines MOMO as "a really jumpy cat that knocks everything over — MOMO gets startled so easily" with SANA laughing to add, "she’d be a little troublemaker — the moment you look away, she’d sneak a snack and get into lots of mischief."

“Ma Cherry" is SANA's solo moment on the album and a song that struck her artist intuition in the A&R process. "They gave me several songs as candidates," the Kansai native shares. "This one resonated with me right away. I could also visualize the stage and performance really clearly, so I felt especially drawn to it." 

While SANA coos, "I put the cherry on top, Ma Cherry on top" throughout the upbeat pop numbers with '80s and '90s hip-hop elements, MINA decides an apple is the perfect fruit to describe SANA because "it’s refreshing and sweet, good for you, and a fruit that pretty much everyone loves." MOMO chooses raspberries "because SANA really likes them," adding how her bandmate "always wears sweet fragrances."

Finally, “Turning Tables” pushes MINA's voice into cooler, more commanding textures; she calls the recording “challenging,” but it results in MISAMO's youngest member delivering one of her most commanding musical moments. "My solo track on the previous album ['Misty'] had a wistful tone, and the solo track included on TWICE’s latest album ['Stone Cold'] was a darker song, so I wanted to try something different," MINA says. "I chose a track that feels hip and cool. Because it was a new style for me, recording was especially challenging." 

With the cool, confident nature of "Turning Tables," the bridge includes the heartwarming lyric, "I lift up people around me." And according to her members, that line is particularly perfect for MINA. SANA says, "Whenever I’m trying to make a decision, and I ask MINA, she’ll say, ‘You could also try it this way,’ and give me another perspective — she’s always so considerate of the other person, so she makes me feel calm and reassured." MOMO adds, "During our trainee days, I spent a lot of time with Mina. It was a hard time, but we always encouraged each other and got through it together." 

PLAY feels designed so that each solo track is a toast to each member, with songs that are not only musically suited to her but also connect on a deeper human level.
