Sophie Powers: “Playful, but with a clear intent”
Flashy gaming-core style, a blunt attitude, and an upbeat message — all of these elements come together to shape the face of Sophie Powers. Beneath the playful exterior lies a deliberate purpose. How does she manage to keep that balance?
1. [RSK] After the release of <STFU>, you’ve gained a growing fanbase in Korea. How does it feel to receive such an enthusiastic response here?
It’s honestly amazing. Korea felt so distant before, and now people know the lyrics and really connect. I’m really grateful for that.
2. [RSK] For your recent Rolling Stone Korea shoot in Seoul, you styled yourself completely. What side of yourself did you want to show through this shoot?
I wanted it to feel authentic. Nothing too polished or forced—just me being deliberate about showing who I really am.
3. [RSK] What was the most important thing for you throughout the styling process?
Comfort and honesty. If I don’t feel like myself in what I’m wearing, it shows immediately. So I chose pieces that genuinely feel like me. That's also why I feel as if I dress like a video game character or a cartoon character most of the time…
4. [RSK] Your signature ‘Gaming core’ style is bold, loud, and highly stylized. How does that style connect to your inner-self?
It’s bold, direct, and a little over-the-top, which matches how I process things internally. It’s playful but intentional, and that balance feels true to me.
5. [RSK] Choosing an outfit or building your stage look is ultimately about how you want to be seen. But in today’s world, even that kind of expression can be shaped by external expectations. How do you navigate those pressures while staying true to yourself?
I try not to focus on other people’s expectations too much. At the end of the day, I’m the one wearing the clothes or standing on stage, i’m the one making the art. The only pressure is coming from myself - not anyone else.
6. [RSK] Also, Gen Z grew up expressing themselves through text, images, and video—but that constant need to “show up” can feel exhausting. What’s your relationship with self-expression in an age where it can feel like a performance?
I make art to spread the message of self expression. Expressing how you feel how you want to truly dress how you want to truly speak, even if it isn’t fitting for all settings. The moment I stop expressing myself, is the moment that life will feel like a performance.
7. [RSK] Looking back, what was a defining moment that shaped who you are today? Not necessarily a grand one—just a moment that made you feel more like yourself.
Probably the first time I was told “no” in an audition room. I was 12 years old and a child actress and walked out of the audition room crying thinking I horribly bombed based off the notes and their mannerisms, but I ended up booking the part. That moment stuck with me and shaped how I approach everything.
8. [RSK] Many people in Korea discovered you through <STFU>, but you’ve actually been making music consistently since 2021. What emotions or questions drove you when you first started making music? Are those still in your music?
I wanted to say things no one else was saying. There was a lot of frustration, confusion, and feeling too much. Those feelings are definitely still there—they just come out in new ways now. like my creative direction, or fashion, or content that I create. There are different mediums that I have brought into my music pathway, rather than solely my lyrics.
9. [RSK] What emotions are fueling your work now? Any new song vibes you can share with us?
A lot of reflection. Frustration, sure, but also wanting to be honest about my own flaws. The new stuff feels darker but still accessible. I’ve also been very inspired by concept artists and film as a whole. I absolutely love film and only recently discovered how much I also love being behind the scenes in building a story. A lot of my new music is very storyline focussed.
10. [RSK] Outside of music, what have you been obsessed with lately? Any books, films, or other forms of art that have recently inspired you?
I’ve been into 90s japanese films, K-pop online dance classes, french bakeries, and things that make me think twice. I also literally love spin class and yoga so much I go like five times a week.
11. [RSK] I heard you love comics. If you had to title the first half of this year like a comic book, what would you call it?
“2025(7)” that was a hint.
12. [RSK] We’ve talked about a lot today, but some stories only come out when the time is right. Is there something you hope to share through music someday?
The really raw, unfiltered parts. Things that feel too personal now but that I know will eventually become songs when the time’s right.
