데뷔한 지 1년이 채 되지 않았지만, 신인 그룹 킥플립(KickFlip)은 시카고 그랜트 파크에서 열린 세계적인 음악 페스티벌 롤라팔루자(Lollapalooza) 무대에 올라 눈에 띄는 존재감을 드러냈다. 짧은 이동을 마친 이들은 롤링스톤 코리아와 만나 무대에 오른 소감과 새 앨범에 얽힌 이야기를 전했다.

2. [RSK] 이렇게 큰 무대에서 미국 데뷔를 하게 된 소감이 어떠세요?

민제: 정말 영광이에요. 미국에서 공연하는 건 항상 꿈꿔오던 일이었는데, 롤라팔루자 무대는 우리에게도 잊지 못할 경험이었어요. 꼭 다시 서보고 싶은 무대예요!

3. [RSK] 무대에 오르기 전, 팀만의 루틴이 있다면 알려주세요.

동화: 있어요! 가끔 다 같이 원을 만들어 “5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, GO! SHOT!”이라고 팀 구호를 외쳐요. 확실히 집중도 되고 에너지도 업됩니다.

4. [RSK] 이번 무대에서 가장 기대되는 곡과, 관객 반응이 가장 좋을 것 같은 노래는 어떤 걸까요?

주왕: <언젠가 태양은 폭발해>랑 <Complicated!!> 두 곡을 무대에서 처음으로 보여드리게 돼서 기대돼요. 또 트와이스(TWICE) 선배님들 곡으로 만든 메들리도 준비했거든요. ONCE와 WeFlip 분들이 좋아해주셨으면 좋겠어요!

5. [RSK] 이번 EP [Kick Out, Flip Now!]는 다섯 명의 멤버가 직접 작업에 참여했다고 들었어요. 각자 작곡할 때 중요하게 생각하는 요소는 무엇인가요?

동현: 이번 EP는 작곡 캠프에서 만든 곡들이에요. 훌륭한 프로듀서, 작가들과 캠퍼스에서 함께 머물며 아이디어를 나누고 협업했어요. 함께해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다!

6. [RSK] 아마루는 다섯 번째 트랙 <Complicated!!>의 작업을 이끌었죠. 이 곡은 어떤 영감에서 시작됐고, 킥플립(KickFlip)의 음악과는 어떻게 맞물린다고 생각하나요?

아마루: <Complicated!!>은 스트레스로 머릿속이 복잡한 날에 대한 곡이에요. “오늘은 그냥 다 멈추고, 내일 생각하자”는 느낌이죠. ‘오늘은 패스’하는 마인드가 킥플립 특유의 에너지와 잘 맞는 것 같아요.

7. [RSK] 앞으로 도전해보고 싶은 장르도 있나요?

동화: 지금까지 낸 곡들 중 <Mama Said (뭐가 되려고?)>, <FREEZE>, <언젠가 태양은 폭발해>, <Complicated!!>는 파워풀한 록 기반 곡들이고, <응 그래>, <제끼자>는 미니멀한 힙합 트렌디 음악이에요. <Electricity>, <Like A Monster>는 올드스쿨 힙합 느낌이고요. 장르보다는 우리만의 색깔을 담는 게 중요하다고 생각해요. 그냥 우리가 하고 싶은 음악을 하는 거죠.

8. [RSK] 앞으로 몇 년 안에 어떤 모습으로 성장해 있을까요? 예를 들어 해외 페스티벌 헤드라이너가 된다든지요.

계훈: 모두가 꿈꾸는 목표죠. 그 무대에 서기 위해 계속 최선을 다할 거예요. 그리고 전 세계의 WeFlip들을 계속 만나고 싶어요.

9. [RSK] 콘텐츠에서 종종 멤버들이 스케이트보드를 타는 모습이 나오는데, 실제로는 어떤가요? 혹시 킥플립 해본 멤버도 있어요?

주왕: 몇 명은 조금 탈 줄 알아요. 근데 실제로 알리(Ollie)를 성공한 건 한 명뿐이고, 킥플립은 아직 못 했어요.

동화: 전 알리는 할 수 있는데 킥플립은 연습 중이에요. 언젠간 꼭 성공하고 싶어요!

10. [RSK] 마지막으로, 롤링스톤 코리아 독자들에게 전하고 싶은 말을 남겨주세요.

케이주: 롤라팔루자에서 롤링스톤 코리아와 함께할 수 있어서 정말 신기하고 기뻤어요. 앞으로 더 큰 무대에서 저희 에너지를 보여드릴 수 있었으면 해요!

KickFlip Makes an Electric Entrance During U.S. Debut at Lollapalooza

Less than a year after their dynamic debut, rising rookie group KickFlip have already made a name for themselves internationally at the famous Lollapalooza music festival at Grant Park in the bustling city of Chicago. Following a quick golf-cart ride, the group sat down with Rolling Stone Korea to discuss this international breakthrough performance as well as the inspiration behind their new EP.

1. [RSK]: Hello KickFlip! We appreciate you taking the time to catch up with us here at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Before we begin, can we get a quick introduction from each member?

All: Flip it! Kick it! We are KickFlip! 

Juwang: Hello, I'm Juwang! 

Keiju: Hi, I'm ‘energy-charger’ Keiju! 

Donghwa: Hi, I'm ‘fairy-tale’ Donghwa.

Kyehoon: I'm Kyehoon, the leader of KickFlip. 

Donghyeon: Hi! I'm the cool, youngest member of this team, Donghyeon. 

Amaru: Hi, I'm ‘smile guy’ Amaru!

Minje: Hello! I'm the funniest member, Minje. 

2. [RSK]: How does it feel to have your U.S. debut at such a huge event?

Minje: It's a great honor. We’ve always dreamed of performing in the U.S. and Lollapalooza was an amazing experience for us. We’d really want to return to that stage once again! 

3. [RSK]: Do you have any pre-show rituals to get pumped up before going on stage? 

Donghwa: Yeah! Sometimes we all get in a circle and shout our team chant like, “5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, GO! SHOT!” It gets us hyped and focused. 

4. [RSK]: Which song are you most excited to perform this weekend? And which do you think the audience will be the most excited to see?

Juwang: I'm most excited to do “언젠가 태양은 폭발해 (Before the Sun Explodes)” and “Complicated!!” since it's our first time performing them on stage. We also prepared a medley of songs by our seniors TWICE. I really hope that ONCE and WeFlip like it!

5. [RSK]: We heard that five members were directly involved in the production of your latest EP “Kick Out, Flip Now!” What do each of you consider to be the key to your own songwriting process?

Donghyeon: Our latest EP was made during one of our songwriting camps. We were all on campus with amazing producers and writers to collaborate and share ideas. Thank you to everyone involved!

6. [RSK]: Amaru, you took charge of the fifth track, “Complicated!!” What was your main inspiration and how would you say it embodies KickFlip’s musical style?

Amaru: “Complicated!!” is about those days when your mind just feels overloaded from stress. It's like, “Hit pause on everything today and deal with tomorrow when it comes.” That ‘skip the mood’ attitude really matches KickFlip’s energy. 

7. [RSK]: Are there any specific genres KickFlip would like to try?

Donghwa: Out of what we’ve released so far, songs like “Mama Said (뭐가 되려고?),” “FREEZE,” “언젠가 태양은 폭발해 (Before the Sun Explodes),” and “Complicated” are powerful, rock-based core music. “응 그래 (Umm Great)” and “제끼자 (Skip It!)” are minimal, hip-hop trendy music. “Electricity” and “Like A Monster” are old school hip-hop vibe music. Overall, I’d say we don't care about genres. We just do our music. 

8. [RSK]: Where do you see yourselves in the next few years? Perhaps headlining an international festival?

Kyehoon: That's everyone's dream. We will do our best until we make it there. And I just want to keep meeting WeFlip around the world. 

9. [RSK]: While the members have been depicted skateboarding in content before, how many of you actually know how? And have any of you attempted a ‘kickflip’ before?

Juwang: Some of us can ride a little, but only one of us actually landed a real alley. Not a kickflip though!

Donghwa: Yes, I can do an alley but I'm still practicing a kickflip. I hope that one day I will do it. 

10. [RSK]: Is there anything else KickFlip would like to tell Rolling Stone Korea readers?

Keiju: It's really amazing to be here with Rolling Stone Korea at Lollapalooza. We really want to show you guys our energy and hope we can go on bigger stages in the future!

Minje: Thank you and all of the K-Pop fans in the whole world!
