고고바닐라즈(go!go!vanillas)가 음악을 대하는 태도는 어린아이가 노는 방식과 닮아 있다. 형식보다 순간의 즐거움을 따르고, 정답보다 호기심을 좇는다. 순수한 감각으로 음악을 만들어내는 이들. 놀이처럼, 실험처럼. 5월 5일 어린이날, 이 장난기 많은 밴드가 서울에 온다.
1. [RSK] 요즘 일본도 봄이 한창일 텐데요, 어떻게 지내고 계시나요?
잠시 쉬는 동안 새로운 콘텐츠(신곡)도 준비하며, 여러분께 에너지를 전해드리려고 하고 있어요.
2. [RSK] 지난해 12월에 발표한 앨범 이야기부터 해볼까요? [Lab.]은 보컬 버전과 함께 인스트루멘털 버전도 발매되었어요. 이렇게 두 가지 형태로 선보인 특별한 이유가 있었을까요?
앨범 제목인 ‘Lab.’처럼, 이번에는 음악적으로 다양한 실험을 해보고 싶었어요. 보컬 멜로디가 중심이 되는 버전도 좋지만, 악기만으로 들을 수 있는 인스트루멘털 버전을 통해 사운드 자체의 매력도 좀 더 부각해보고 싶었거든요. 그런 의도로 두 가지 버전으로 발매하게 되었습니다.
3. [RSK] 앨범 제목이 ‘Lab.’인 만큼, 이번에 새로운 시도를 해보고 싶었던 트랙이나 사운드가 있었다면요?
개인적으로는 <Shake>라는 곡에 애정이 있어요. 예전부터 동경해온 런던에서 녹음을 했는데, 그곳에서 다양한 음악적 시도와 새로운 경험을 할 수 있었어요. 그게 이번 앨범 작업에서 가장 기억에 남는 부분 중 하나였던 것 같아요.
4. [RSK] [Lab.]의 수록곡 중 라이브에서 꼭 들려주고 싶은 곡이 있다면 어떤 곡인가요? 그 이유도 함께 듣고 싶어요.
가장 먼저 떠오르는 곡은 앞서 말씀드린 <Shake>입니다. 특히 이번 한국 공연에서는 꼭 들려드리고 싶은 곡이에요. 한국에서도 요즘 다양한 음악적 시도들이 이뤄지고 있고, 미국이나 영국 음악의 영향을 받은 장르들도 많이 들리잖아요. 저희 역시 그런 음악적 흐름을 자연스럽게 흡수하고 있기 때문에, <Shake> 같은 곡이 한국 리스너들에게 어떻게 다가갈지 궁금하고 기대돼요.

5. [RSK] go!go!vanillas 하면 빼놓을 수 없는 곡들 이야기를 해볼까요. <Heisei Pain>은 헤이세이 세대와 쇼와 세대 간의 갈등을 위트 있게 다룬 곡이에요. 이 곡을 만들게 된 계기와 담고자 했던 메시지를 소개해주실 수 있을까요?
저도 헤이세이 원년에 태어난 세대다 보니, 쇼와 시대와 헤이세이 시대의 장단점을 모두 경험하며 살아온 입장이에요. 요즘은 시대의 단점만을 부각하는 경향이 강한데, 저는 오히려 서로의 좋은 점을 잘 섞어가는 시도가 필요하다고 느꼈어요. 그래서 그런 생각을 바탕으로 <Heisei Pain>을 만들게 되었고, 음악을 통해 세대 간의 차이를 위트 있게 풀어보고 싶었습니다.
6. [RSK] 뮤직비디오 중 ‘踊れ平成ペイン(오도레 헤이세이페인)’ 파트에서 인상적인 손동작이 등장하는데요. 이 동작은 어떻게 탄생하게 되었는지, 어떤 의미를 담고 있는지 궁금합니다.
뮤직비디오를 보신 분들은 아시겠지만, 쇼와 댄스팀과 헤이세이 댄스팀이 각자 다른 스타일로 춤을 추다가 결국 하나로 합쳐지는 구성이에요. 세대 간의 차이를 드러내는 동시에, 결국 음악이라는 공통점으로 하나가 되는 과정을 담고 싶었어요. 그래서 손동작이나 안무도 그런 ‘차이 속의 공통점’을 표현하는 상징적인 요소로 만들어졌습니다.
7. [RSK] ”헤이세이 세대"로서, 직접 체감하는 세대 간의 간극이나 공감대가 있다면 어떤 것들이 있는지도 궁금합니다.
아무래도 가장 크게 느껴지는 건 디지털 환경에 대한 감각이에요. 우리는 인터넷과 스마트폰에 익숙하게 자란 세대잖아요. 그래서 커뮤니케이션 방식도 훨씬 유연하고 편리하게 느껴지는 것 같아요. 또한, 이전 세대가 경쟁 중심이었다면, 우리는 즐거움과 협업을 중시하는 경향이 강하다고 생각해요. 밴드를 한다는 것 자체가 그런 가치를 반영하고 있는 거죠.
8. [RSK] 2013년에 데뷔 후 지금까지 발매한 곡 중에서 멤버들이 가장 아끼는 곡은 무엇일까요?
라이브에서 자주 부르게 되는 곡 중에 <EMA>라는 노래가 있어요. 많은 분들이 좋아해 주셔서 저희도 애정이 가는 곡입니다. 그리고 멤버들 모두가 특별히 소중하게 생각하는 곡은 <Orient>예요. 아마추어 시절부터 지금까지 꾸준히 불러온 곡이라 그런지, 저희에게도 의미가 깊고 많은 분들께 꼭 들려드리고 싶은 곡이에요.
9. [RSK] go!go!vanillas만의 음악 세계는 해가 지날수록 점점 더 넓어지고 있어요. 밴드로서 지켜가고 싶은 음악적 정체성은 무엇이며, 앞으로 더 탐험해보고 싶은 사운드나 주제는 있을까요?
음악이 확장되어가고 있지만, 그 안에서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 건 '연주자의 감정'이에요. 그 감정이 음악 속에 잘 녹아 있어야 한다고 믿어요. 또 처음 음악을 시작했을 때부터 영향을 받아온 비틀즈나 브리티시 인베이전의 정신들. 이를테면 도전, 변화, 개척 같은 가치를 계속 음악 속에 담고 싶습니다.
10. [RSK] 반가운 소식이 있어요. 이번 한국 공연이 5월 5일로 예정되어 있으시죠. ‘5’가 일본어로 ‘Go’인 만큼, 혹시 go!go!vanillas라는 밴드명과도 연결해 일부러 이 날짜를 선택하신 걸까요?
맞아요, ‘5’가 일본어로 ‘고’라고 읽히는 점에서 날짜를 정했어요. 그리고 5월 5일은 일본에서도 어린이날이거든요. go!go!vanillas는 언제나 음악을 놀이처럼 즐기자는 마음으로 활동해 왔기 때문에, 이 날짜가 그런 저희의 정서와도 잘 맞는다고 생각했어요.
11. [RSK] 한국 공연을 앞두고 멤버들끼리 가장 기대하고 있는 건 어떤 부분인가요?
이번이 첫 한국 공연이라 기대가 정말 커요. 무대도 물론 기대되지만, 저희는 한국의 거리 풍경을 직접 보고 체험하는 것도 기대하고 있어요. 관광지보다는 사람들이 실제로 살아가는 일상 공간에서 어떤 분위기와 감성을 느낄 수 있을지 궁금합니다. 그리고 한국에 음악하는 친구도 있어서, 함께 시간을 보내는 것도 기대하고 있어요.
12. [RSK] 이번 공연을 팬들이 더 재밌게 즐기기 위해 알고 있으면 좋은 팁이 있을까요?
첫 공연인 만큼, 한국 팬분들이 쉽게 따라 부를 수 있는 곡들을 중심으로 셋리스트를 구성하고 있어요. 다 같이 떼창하거나 리듬을 타면서 함께 즐길 수 있는 순간들을 많이 만들고 싶어요. 대표곡 위주로 준비했으니, 편하게 따라와 주시면 될 것 같아요!
13. [RSK] 마지막으로, 공연을 기다리고 있는 한국 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지를 부탁드릴게요.

go!go!vanillas approach music the way children play by following joy over form, curiosity over correctness. Their sound is born from pure instinct, created like a game, like an experiment. On May 5th, Children’s Day, this mischievous band brings their playful spirit to Seoul.
1. [RSK] Spring must be in full swing in Japan these days. How have you been?
While taking a short break, we’re also preparing new content (new songs) to bring energy to all of you.
2. [RSK] Let’s start with your latest release. In December, you released “Lab.” along with a separate instrumental version. What inspired you to present the album in these two formats?
Just like the album title "Lab.", this time we wanted to experiment more musically. While we love the version centered around vocal melodies, we also wanted to highlight the charm of the sound itself through an instrumental version. That’s why we decided to release two versions.
3. [RSK] As the title ‘Lab.’ suggests, were there any tracks or sounds that felt like bold experiments for you as a band?
Personally, I have a lot of affection for the song "Shake." We recorded it in London, a city I’ve long admired, and it gave me the chance to try out different musical ideas and have new experiences. I think that was one of the most memorable parts of working on this album.
4. [RSK] Among the songs on “Lab.”, is there a track you’re especially excited to perform live? We'd love to hear why.
The first song that comes to mind is "Shake," which I mentioned earlier. It’s a track we’re especially eager to perform at our show in Korea. These days, there’s a lot of musical experimentation happening in Korea, and you can hear strong influences from American and British music. Since we’ve naturally absorbed those musical currents ourselves, we're really curious and excited to see how a song like "Shake" will resonate with Korean listeners.

5. [RSK] Let’s talk about one of your signature tracks. “Heisei Pain” explores the generational tension between the Heisei and Showa eras with a clever twist. What led you to write this song, and what message did you hope to convey?
Since I was born in the first year of the Heisei era, I’ve lived through both the Showa and Heisei periods, experiencing the strengths and weaknesses of each. These days, it feels like people tend to focus only on the negatives of a particular era, but I think what we really need is an effort to blend the best aspects of both. That’s the idea behind "Heisei Pain". I wanted to explore generational differences through music in a witty, light-hearted way.
6. [RSK] In the music video, there's a memorable hand gesture during the “Odore Heisei Pain(踊れ平成ペイン)” part. How did that move come about, and what meaning does it carry?
As those who’ve seen the music video might know, it features a Showa dance team and a Heisei dance team, each dancing in their own distinct style before eventually coming together as one. We wanted to highlight generational differences, but also show how music can unite us in the end. That’s why the hand movements and choreography were designed as symbolic elements to express that sense of "common ground within differences."
7. [RSK] As members of the Heisei generation yourselves, are there any generational gaps or shared experiences that you personally relate to?
I think the biggest difference we feel is our sensitivity to the digital environment. We’re a generation that grew up with the internet and smartphones, so communication feels much more flexible and convenient to us. Also, while previous generations were more focused on competition, I believe our generation values joy and collaboration more. Being in a band itself is a reflection of those values.
8. [RSK] Since your debut in 2013, which of your own songs do you hold most dear, and why?
One of the songs we often perform live is "EMA." It’s a track that many people love, so it’s become a favorite of ours as well. And a song that holds special meaning for all of us is "Orient." We’ve been performing it consistently since our amateur days, so it carries a lot of personal significance. It’s definitely a song we always want to share with our audience.
9. [RSK] The musical world of go!go!vanillas keeps expanding with every release. What kind of musical identity do you hope to preserve as a band, and are there any new sounds or themes you'd like to explore in the future?
While music continues to evolve and expand, what we value most at its core is the emotion of the performer. We believe that emotion needs to be deeply embedded in the music itself. Since the beginning, we’ve been influenced by bands like ‘The Beatles’ and the spirit of the ‘British Invasion’ things like boldness, change, and a pioneering mindset. We always want to carry those values in our music.
10. [RSK] We heard you guys will be performing in Korea on May 5. Since “5” is pronounced “Go” in Japanese, was the date intentionally chosen to tie in with your band name?
That’s right. We chose the date because the number "5" is pronounced “go” in Japanese. And May 5th is also Children’s Day in Japan. Since go!go!vanillas has always approached music with a playful, fun-loving spirit, we felt this date really reflects who we are.
11. [RSK] As you prepare for the Korea show, what are the members most looking forward to?
Since this is our first performance in Korea, we’re really excited. Of course, we’re looking forward to being on stage, but we’re also eager to experience the streets and everyday atmosphere of Korea firsthand. Rather than just visiting tourist spots, we’re curious to feel the vibe and emotions of the places where people actually live. Plus, we have a musician friend in Korea, so we’re also looking forward to spending time together.
12. [RSK] Do you have any fun tips for fans on how to enjoy the upcoming show even more?
Since it’s our first show in Korea, we’re putting together a setlist with songs that Korean fans can easily sing along to. We really want to create moments where everyone can chant together or groove to the rhythm. We’ve included a lot of our signature tracks, so just come along and enjoy the ride with us!
13. [RSK] Lastly, is there a message you’d like to share with your Korean fans who are looking forward to the concert?
When we performed in Japan, many Korean fans came to see us and often shared such warm messages. Now, getting the chance to perform right where you are feels incredibly exciting and meaningful. We’re so happy. We’re looking forward to experiencing your everyday scenery and culture firsthand, and we hope to channel that inspiration into our future music. We’ll be bringing those feelings with us onto the stage, so we’d be truly grateful if you enjoy the show with us.
