Inside the Mind of bbno$: A Quirky, Cheap, Family-Oriented, and Genuine Viral Rapper
For someone who eats like a way into understanding the world, the easiest entry point into bbno$’s reality might just be through his stomach. We took bbno$ to Queen’s Harbour, a place located by the waterfront in downtown Toronto, right near the base of the CN Tower, with lake views, fusion cuisine, and a relaxed, lively atmosphere that naturally makes people let their guard down and step a little closer to their inner world.
Not long after we sat down, he suddenly started dropping a few lines of fluent Chinese, which caught me off guard. It turns out he has been studying the language since high school, taking weekly classes for nine years. In hindsight, it almost feels like an invisible thread that quietly connected him to the early wave of his unexpected rise in China, long before online virality became part of his identity.
That rise, however, didn’t begin in a planned way. It started, as he recalls, almost entirely by accident.
During his time at university, he had already reached a point where music felt like it might not go anywhere. He was close to stepping away from it entirely. Unexpectedly, a message came in from someone he didn’t know, a brief note pointing out that his music was suddenly blowing up in China. With the help of an international exchange student, he registered on WeChat, connected directly with early fans, and began engaging with them in group chats. It was completely hands-on. No management layer, no strategy deck, just curiosity and direct interaction. From there, he started doing his own research, slowly learning how to operate his own social media presence.
The tendency to take matters into his own hands and that almost workaholic drive, seems to come from his father, which naturally points to the environment he grew up in and the kind of household he was raised in. bbno$ grew up in what he describes as a loving family. “I was never in the place where I was like freely available to go spend all my parents’ money. I think they would give me like a $5 allowance every week, so I would spend that on like either World of Warcraft, or I would get $5 of candy, but, you know, I grew up in a household that was incredibly loving. I love my family. I think because I was homeschooled, we developed such like an intimate relationship with each other.”
All three kids were home-schooled, something he now sees not just as an upbringing choice, but as a defining structure of his personality. It’s also something he hopes to continue in the future if he has kids, so that they can spend more time together as a family.
Despite his playful chaotic online persona, often leaning into the image of a troublemaker, he does admit he was a bit of one growing up. The foundation at home shaped something more steady: a sense of loyalty, and a strong attachment to his family. The glasses he wears belonged to his grandfather, and the necklace around his neck came from his grandmother. As he said, it’s a way of keeping his family with him, wherever he goes.
By now, bbno$ is widely known as a global success - his streaming numbers, his online presence, and his reach across platforms all point to a level of commercial success that clearly reflects where he stands today financially. And yet, he still describes himself in one word: cheap. Even today, he insists that financially, not much has changed. He doesn’t take Ubers, preferring instead to walk wherever he can. “I spend a lot of money on coffee, at least two a day.” Spending $15 a day on coffee, in his words, is a meaningful expense.
When asked about his most expensive personal purchase recently, he points to a watch he bought three years ago. “I don’t wear it because it broke, which was $13,000. I don’t know why I bought it because I don’t wear it.”
His relationship with money, however, goes beyond frugality. It carries a kind of philosophical discomfort. “I just think that spending money doesn’t actually make you any happier. It really doesn’t make a difference in my life. If anything, it just makes me more depressed, because like I just spent $2,000 on a bag. Why do I own this? Why am I falling victim to consumerism? And then I think about all the minutia of it.”
Despite that mindset, there is one future purchase he does see himself making: a house near his parents in Vancouver. Not as a status symbol, but as proximity - to continue his family’s tradition of living close to one another. It again reflects how important family is to him, and how close his relationship with them remains.
Today, bbno$ says he is single, and genuinely enjoying it. His focus right now is on his work, his life, and on himself, and is letting things unfold naturally. When it comes to relationships, he’s clear about what he values. Communication, he says, is essential, especially given the unpredictable rhythm of his career. He acknowledges that he isn’t always emotionally available in the way a “normal” relationship might require, and that any future partner would need to understand that, rather than push against it.
K-pop is something bbno$ is more than familiar with. His music has been widely picked up by K-pop artists, through covers, dance challenges, and beyond, which has only deepened his connection to this culture. He tells us he’s already in talks for potential collaborations in the K-pop space. Talking about it, he turns to the camera and calls out: “Stray Kids, Felix, please.”
Before the interview, I was curious how much of “bbno$” was persona, and how much was real. By the end of it, the line felt almost irrelevant. On and off camera, he’s the same. As he puts it, maintaining a version of yourself that isn’t real is exhausting, and simply not sustainable.
He’s candid about his flaws, and he knows exactly where his strengths lie. More importantly, he doesn’t hide either of them. And maybe that’s one of the reasons it works. In an industry built on image, being consistent and being real, is what actually lasts.
That same honesty carries into his latest single "round and round", released on May 12, a track that explores the tension between ambition and integrity, evoking a party, a hustle, a moment of reckoning. The part-time angel, the man cutting in line, these seemingly random images actually carry a deeper layer of meaning. Life is constantly spinning, and you move with it, but the real question is: who are you when the music drops?
Go have a listen, bbno$ always gives you more than you expect.
