화려한 수상 기록을 지닌 태국 아티스트 제프 사투르가 마침내 자신의 ‘Red Giant’ 시대를 마무리하고 있다. 지난해 아시아와 라틴 아메리카에서 성공적인 투어를 진행하고 동명의 EP를 발표한 그는, 많은 사랑을 받아온 싱어송라이터이자 배우로서 창작 여정의 다음 장을 기대하고 있다. 3월 초, <롤링스톤 코리아>는 제프를 만나 그의 커리어에서 중요한 전환점이 된 이 시기를 돌아보는 한편, 기대를 모으고 있는 드라마 시리즈 <해피 엔딩(Happy Ending)>을 포함한 향후 프로젝트에 대해 이야기를 나눴다. 
 

1. [RSK] 안녕하세요 제프! 오늘 함께하게 되어 기쁩니다. 먼저 제프를 처음 접하는 독자들을 위해 간단한 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

제프: 안녕하세요, 저는 제프 사투르예요! 태국에서 활동하는 아티스트이자 배우, 그리고 음악 프로듀서입니다. 드라마 <킨 포르쉐(KinnPorsche the Series La ‘forte)>나 영화 <더 파라다이스 오브 쏜즈(The Paradise of Thorns)>, 혹은 제 음악을 통해 저를 알고 계실 수도 있어요. 최근에는 태국어와 영어로 쓴 곡들이 담긴 EP [Red Giant]를 발표했고, 지난해 말에는 투어도 마쳤습니다. 제 재미있는 사실 하나를 말하자면, 저는 묘하게 힘이 센 편이에요. 마치 스파이더맨 같달까요! 가끔은 의도하지도 않았는데 물건을 부수기도 해요.


2. [RSK] 2025년은 말 그대로 ‘Red Giant의 해’였습니다. 1월 싱글 <Ride or Die> 발매로 시작해 5월에는 <Red Giant Tour 2025>에 돌입했고, 그 무대에서 <Tell Me The Name>을 처음 선보이기도 했습니다. 이후 몇 달 동안 라틴 아메리카와 아시아를 순회하다가 11월 17일 쿠알라룸푸르 공연을 끝으로 투어를 마무리했는데요. 이는 EP [Red Giant]가 완전체로 공개되기 불과 이틀 전이었습니다. 이러한 앨범 공개 전략을 선택한 이유가 있을까요?

제프: 대부분 타이밍 때문이었어요. 시간이 정말 제한적이었기 때문에, 태국에서 열리는 첫 콘서트 전에 최대한 많은 곡을 발표하려는 데 초점을 맞췄어요. 그런데 결국 투어를 먼저 마친 뒤 완성된 EP를 공개해야 한다는 걸 깨달았죠. 작년 일정이 워낙 바빴거든요. 충분히 고민할 시간도 없이 더 많은 곡을 밀어붙였다면 스스로도 만족하지 못했을 것 같아요. 그래서 준비가 됐다고 느낀 곡들만 먼저 발표하고, 동시에 투어를 진행했어요.


3. [RSK] ‘적색 거성(Red Giant)’은 “새로운 시작을 앞두고 폭발 직전의 강렬한 변화를 겪는 별의 상태”를 의미합니다. 이 콘셉트는 아티스트로서 제프의 여정과 어떤 식으로 맞닿아 있나요?

제프: 제 안에는 항상 ‘토성(Saturn)’과 ‘태양(Sun)’이 공존하고 있어요. 완전히 다른 성격을 가진 두 사람 같은 존재죠. ‘토성’은 조금 더 내향적인 편이에요. 반면 ‘햇빛(Sunshine)’은 콘서트나 뮤직비디오에서만 만날 수 있는 캐릭터에 가까워요. 더 자신감 있는 제 모습이죠. 저는 무대 위에서 공연할 때의 저 자신을 ‘햇빛’이라고 생각해요.

‘적색 거성’은 별이 진화의 마지막 단계에 접어들며 가장 밝게 빛나는 순간을 뜻하잖아요. 그래서 이 앨범은 ‘햇빛’에게 그런 단계와도 같아요. 그 다음에 무엇이 올지는 아무도 모르죠. 완전히 새로운 은하가 펼쳐질 수도 있고요. 제 머릿속에서 이 챕터가 끝을 향해 가고 있다는 걸 느꼈기 때문에, 이 이름을 사용하게 됐어요.


 

4. [RSK] 제프는 뮤지션일 뿐 아니라 프로듀서이자 각본가, 배우이기도 합니다. 팬들은 제프가 이 모든 역할을 맡아 참여하는 새 드라마 <해피 엔딩>을 기대하고 있는데요. 이 작품을 한 문장으로 소개해 준다면요?

제프: 소설 속 악역이 현실 세계로 튀어나와, 그 소설의 안티 팬을 만나게 되는 이야기예요!


5. [RSK] 제작 과정에서 가장 먼저 시작한 것은 무엇이었나요?

제프: 저는 시리즈를 위해 음악을 먼저 만들었습니다. 예를 들어 <해리 포터>의 OST를 들으면 바로 ‘아, 해리 포터구나’ 하고 알아차릴 수 있잖아요. 그런 것처럼, 작품을 상징할 수 있는 사운드를 만들고 싶었어요. 일단 올바른 사운드를 찾게 되면 시리즈의 전반적인 바이브가 자연스럽게 잡히고, 어떤 식으로 영상과 맞춰야 할지도 감이 오게 되거든요.


6. [RSK] 제작 과정의 여러 단계에 깊이 관여하고 있는데, 현장에서 이런 다양한 역할을 어떻게 균형 있게 소화했나요?

제프: 솔직히 꽤 어려웠어요. 하지만 한 번에 하나씩 해내는 게 중요하다고 생각해요. 예를 들어 장면을 편집할 때는 그 작업에만 집중하는 거죠. 다른 것들까지 동시에 신경 쓸 필요는 없어요. 그리고 무엇보다 저는 정말 똑똑하고 재능 있는 팀과 함께하고 있어요. 제가 미처 잘하지 못하는 부분은 팀원들이 가르쳐주고 또 많이 도와주죠. 촬영 과정의 모든 부분에 제 흔적이 조금씩은 담기길 바라지만… 그렇다고 제 모든 것이 100% 들어갈 필요는 없다고 생각해요!


7. [RSK] <해피 엔딩>은 2023년에 설립하신 아티스트 매니지먼트 에이전시 ‘Studio On Saturn’의 첫 오리지널 시리즈입니다. 앞으로는 어떤 장르에 도전해보고 싶나요?

제프: 저는 웹툰을 정말 많이 읽어요. 대부분 판타지 이야기인데요. 예를 들면 ‘다른 세계에 환생해서 특별한 능력을 얻게 된다’ 같은 설정들이죠. 그런 작품들을 읽는 걸 정말 좋아해서, 언젠가는 그런 스타일의 시리즈도 만들어보고 싶어요. 



8. [RSK] 드라마뿐만 아니라 <창 아시아 타일랜드(CHUANG ASIA THAILAND)>, 그리고 현재 iQIYI에서 방영 중인 <런닝맨 태국: 멈추지 말고 달려라(Running Man Thailand)> 등 다양한 예능 프로그램에도 출연했습니다. 한국에서도 비슷한 프로그램의 진행자나 멘토로 참여해보고 싶은 생각이 있나요?

제프: 정말 해보고 싶어요! 한국뿐만 아니라 어디든 좋습니다. 다른 재능 있는 아티스트들과 함께 작업하는 것도 좋고, 멘토 역할을 맡아 참가자들을 만나보는 것도 흥미로울 것 같아요. 특히 젊은 Gen-Z 세대 특유의 에너지를 직접 느낄 수 있을 것 같아서 기대됩니다.


9. [RSK] 최근 몇 년 사이 태국 아티스트들이 글로벌 무대에서 큰 존재감을 보여주고 있습니다. 그중에서도 방콕에서 열린 <제74회 미스유니버스 선발대회(The 74th MissUniverse)> 파이널에서 선보인 오프닝 무대는 전 세계적으로 화제가 됐죠. 그렇게 큰 규모의 행사에서 공연하는 경험은 어땠나요?

제프: 정말 긴장도 됐고 동시에 무척 설레기도 했어요. 그런 규모의 무대는 처음이었거든요. 게다가 그날 아침 7시에 꽤 높은 음역대의 곡들을 모두 소화해야 했기 때문에 쉽지 않은 일이었죠. 이 이야기는 태국 매체에서도 한 번 한 적이 있는데, 사실 진행 측에서는 제가 립싱크로 공연하길 원했어요. 하지만 제 커리어에서 한 번도 해본 적이 없는 방식이라 저에게는 꽤 긴장되는 일이었습니다.

리허설 첫날에 한 번 시도해봤는데 전혀 잘 되지 않았어요. 정말 못 하겠더라고요. 그래서 그날 밤, 결국 라이브로 노래하기로 마음을 바꿨죠. 무대에서는 워낙 많은 일이 동시에 일어나기 때문에, 새벽 2시에 일어나 목을 풀고 준비를 했어요.

그날은 메인 트랙을 맞춰주는 메트로놈이 원래 트랙보다 딜레이가 생겼고, 스피커에서 나온 소리가 뒤쪽 벽에 부딪혀 다시 돌아오면서 귀에 세 가지 소리가 동시에 들리는 상황이었어요. 정말 정신없는 순간이었죠. 이후 팀이 메트로놈을 수정하면서 상황이 조금 나아졌지만, 제가 제대로 부르고 있는지 아닌지는 확신할 수 없었어요. 사실 이런 경우에는 객석에서 지켜보는 사람들만이 알 수 있는 거니까요.

그 순간 저는 굉장한 책임감을 느꼈어요. 지금까지 해온 모든 것, 지금까지의 성과와 앞으로의 미래까지 이 무대에 걸고 있는 것 같은 기분이었죠. 

지금 돌이켜보면 스스로가 정말 자랑스러워요. 재미있는 건, 막상 무대 위에서는 걱정을 잊어버리는데 공연이 끝나고 이틀쯤 지나면 다시 그 생각이 나면서 긴장이 되더라고요. 저는 제 작업을 다시 보고 듣는 걸 별로 좋아하지 않는데도 결국 매번 확인하게 돼요. 왜 그런지 저도 잘 모르겠어요!

10. [RSK] (인터뷰 날짜를 기준으로) 이번 주 후반에는 로스앤젤레스의 권위 있는 <그래미 뮤지엄(GRAMMY Museum)>에서도 공연을 선보일 예정이죠. 이번 경험에서 가장 기대되는 점은 무엇인가요?

제프: 팬들을 만나는 일이에요. 저는 전 세계 어디에 있든 팬들을 직접 만나고 싶어요. 그들이 저를 기다리고 있다는 걸 알고 있으니까요. 어떻게든 기회를 만들어서 찾아가 만나고 싶습니다. 그래미 뮤지엄 공연은 미국에서 팬들과 처음 만나는 자리라 더욱 기대가 돼요. 그리고 앞으로는 완전한 콘서트 형태의 공연으로 다시 돌아오게 될 것 같아요!


11. [RSK] 인터뷰를 마무리하면서, <롤링스톤 코리아> 독자들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면요?

제프: 행복하게, 그리고 매일을 즐기면서 지내세요. 여러분이 어디에 있든 제가 찾아갈게요. 그리고 제 콘서트를 직접 들고 가겠습니다. ‘Red Giant’ 시대는 이제 막을 내리지만, 곧 많은 새로운 일들이 기다리고 있어요. 어떤 것들은 지금 말씀드릴 수 있고, 또 어떤 것들은 아직 비밀이지만… 분명 좋은 소식이 될 거예요.

Thai Superstar Jeff Satur Is Entering a New Era Following The ‘Year of Red Giant”

Award-winning Thai artist Jeff Satur is finally concluding his “Red Giant” era. After a successful tour in Asia and Latin America last year and the release of an EP by the same name, the widely beloved singer-songwriter and actor is looking forward to the next chapter of his creative journey. At the beginning of March, Rolling Stone Korea met up with Jeff to look back on this formative time of his career as well as upcoming projects including the highly anticipated drama series “Happy Ending.”

1. [RSK] Hello Jeff! We are excited to have you with us today. Let’s begin with a short self introduction for readers who may be meeting you for the first time.

Hi, I’m Jeff Satur! I'm an artist, actor, and music producer from Thailand. You may know me from “KinnPorsche” or “Paradise of Thorns,” and maybe my songs! I just released an EP called “Red Giant” with tracks written in Thai and English, and I also finished up a tour at the end of last year. One fun fact about me is that I have a mysterious level of strength. It's like Spider-Man! I break things without trying or even realizing sometimes.

2. [RSK] 2025 was truly the “Year of Red Giant.” After kicking things off with the release of your single “Ride or Die” in January, you began the Red Giant Tour that May where you debuted the track “Tell Me The Name.” Throughout the next couple of months, you continued to travel through Latin America and Asia until the final stop in Kuala Lumpur on November 17, only two days before the release of the Red Giant EP in its entirety. What made you decide on this rollout strategy for the album? 

It was mostly about timing. We had such limited time, so it was more about trying to release as many songs as possible before the opening concert in Thailand. It was hard because we eventually realized we had to finish the tour first and release the completed EP after that. The schedule for last year was pretty busy, and if I had tried to push more songs out when I didn’t have time to think about it properly, I wouldn’t have been able to feel good about it. So I just released the songs I thought were ready and did the tour at the same time. 

3. [RSK] The Red Giant concept represents “the intense, transformative state of a star right before it bursts into a brand-new beginning.” How does this mirror your personal journey as an artist? 

It's always Saturn and the Sun inside of me. They’re like two people that have such different personalities. Saturn is more introverted. Sunshine is a character that you would only meet at a concert or in my music video. It’s a part of me that is more confident. I look at myself when I’m performing as Sunshine. 

A Red Giant is a star in the final stage of evolution when it’s going to be its brightest, so this album is like that stage for Sunshine. Nobody knows what comes after that. It's going to be a completely new galaxy. So because we’re getting closer to the end of this chapter inside my head, I decided to use this name.

4. [RSK] Not only are you a musician, but you are also a producer, scriptwriter, and actor! Fans are excited for you to take on all of these roles in the upcoming drama series “Happy Ending.” Can you describe the series in one sentence? 

A villain from a novel gets out into the real world and meets up with an anti-fan of the novel!

5. [RSK] What is the first thing you started with during the production process?

I produce music to produce the series. I tried to come up with a sound that would be pretty iconic, like how you hear Harry Potter's OST and know immediately that it’s Harry Potter. Once you find the right sound you will know the vibe of the series and get a feeling of how to match the visuals. 

6. [RSK] As you are involved in so many aspects of the production process, how do you balance handling each of these responsibilities on set?

It was pretty hard, but I’d say you have to take things one at a time. Like when you’re cutting the scenes, you’re just doing that. You don't have to care about the other stuff. Also, I have a very smart and talented team that I have a lot of trust in. They teach and help me out with things that I’m not as good at. I want there to be a little bit of me inside of every part of the filming process… but maybe not all 100% of me!

7. [RSK] “Happy Ending” is the first original series from Studio On Saturn, the artist management agency you established in 2023. What other kinds of genres do you want to tackle in the future? 

I mean, I read a lot of Webtoons. It's all fantasy stories, like ‘being born in another world where you have special powers’ kind of stuff. I love reading those, so I’d like to do that type of series too! 

8. [RSK] Aside from scripted dramas, you have appeared in quite a few variety shows including Chuang Asia as well as Running Man Thailand, which is currently airing on iQiyi. Would you ever want to come over and participate as a host or mentor on a similar program in Korea?

I would love to! Not just in Korea, but anywhere. I'd be into working alongside other talented artists or being a mentor and meeting with all of the participants that really bring out that young Gen-Z energy.

9. [RSK] Over the past few years, Thai artists have really made a splash on a global level. One iconic stage seen around the world was your opening act performance for the 74th Miss Universe final in Bangkok. What was it like to perform at such a large scale event?

I was pretty nervous and also excited for the show because it was my first time doing something like that. I had to perform all of those songs, which are pretty high, at seven in the morning. It was gonna be a tough job to do. I’ve talked about this in Thai media before, but the host actually wanted me to lip synch for the show. I've never done that before in my career, so it was tense for me. The first day of rehearsal I tried, but it didn’t work at all. I just couldn’t do it. So I decided that night that I wanted to do live singing. I woke up at 2:00am to just warm up my voice and everything, as there is a lot going on when you’re on stage. That day, the metronome, which indicates the main track that you’re singing, was delayed from the original track, and the sound coming out from the speaker went out to the back wall and echoed, so it was like three sounds ringing in my ears. It was crazy. After the team fixed the metronome it got better, but I still wasn’t sure if I was singing things right or wrong. In these cases, nobody really knows except for those that are watching in the audience. I felt a lot of responsibility, like I was betting all of the things that I've done in the past, all the success, and also the future on this performance. Looking back on it, I'm so proud of myself. It’s funny because when I’m on stage, I forget about worrying, but then maybe two days after that I get nervous thinking about it. I don't really like watching or listening to my own work, but I end up doing so every time. I don't know why!

10. [RSK] You were also invited to do a set at the illustrious Grammy Museum in Los Angeles later this week! What are you most looking forward to about that experience? 

Meeting my fans. I always want to see them wherever they are in the world because I know they're waiting for me. I don't know how, but I'll find a chance to go and meet them. The Grammy Museum performance is going to be my first time meeting with fans in the United States, so I’m excited. And I think I'll be coming back in the future with a whole show! 

11. [RSK] As the interview is coming to a close, is there anything else you would like to say to Rolling Stone Korea readers?

Be happy and enjoy every day. I'll find you wherever you are and I'll bring my concert to you. This is the end of the Red Giant era, but a lot of new things are coming soon.
