크리스티안 쿠리아(Christian Kuria)의 새 앨범 [Paradigm]은 단순한 음악 앨범이 아니다. 고통과 침묵의 시간을 지나며 마주한 변곡점, 그 과정을 통해 삶을 새롭게 바라보게 된 이야기가 고스란히 담긴 기록에 가깝다. 슬픔에 무너지고, 현실에서 점점 멀어졌던 시간. 하지만 그는 결국 다시 빛을 향해 걸어 나왔고, [Paradigm]은 그가 삶의 방향을 정립하며 내디딘 첫걸음이다. “살다 보면, 어느 순간 내가 세상을 바라보는 방식이 달라졌다는 걸 깨닫게 되잖아요. 그 변화가 참 아름답다고 생각해요.”

1. [RSK] 안녕하세요, 크리스티안! 롤링스톤 코리아에 오신 걸 환영해요. 오늘 하루 어떻게 보내셨어요?

초대해 주셔서 감사해요! 저는 어릴 때부터 롤링스톤 인터뷰를 정말 많이 읽었거든요. 이렇게 인터뷰하게 된 게 저한테도 큰 의미가 있어요. 시간 내주셔서 고맙습니다.

2. [RSK] 새 앨범 [Paradigm]이 나왔죠, 이번 앨범은 어떤 계기로 만들게 됐는지 궁금해요.

시작은 2023년 ‘Suspension of Disbelief’ 투어가 끝났을 때였어요. 집에 돌아온 지 일주일쯤 됐을 때, 그냥 연습 삼아 곡 하나 써봤는데 그게 <Ride>였어요. 쓰자마자 ‘이거다’ 싶은 느낌이 왔죠. 그 순간, 뭔가 새롭게 만들어야겠다는 확신이 들었고, 그게 이번 앨범의 시작이 됐어요.

3. [RSK] 이번 앨범을 통해 어떤 이야기를 전하고 싶었나요?

[Paradigm]은 [Suspension]에서 이어지는 이야기 같아요. 그사이에 개인적으로 꽤 힘든 시간을 보냈거든요. 이 앨범은 그 과정을 솔직하게 담아낸 작업이에요. 무너지고, 현실에서 멀어졌던 시간이 지나고, 결국 다시 빛을 찾게 된 흐름이랄까요. 되돌아보면 제 삶의 중요한 시기를 꾹 눌러 담은 앨범이라, 저한테는 참 소중해요.

4. [RSK] 앨범 제목을 ‘Paradigm’으로 정한 특별한 이유가 있을까요?

동명의 곡 <Paradigm>을 쓰고 나서, 앨범 제목도 그걸로 가야겠다는 생각이 자연스럽게 들었어요. 앨범 전반에 흐르는 ‘변화’라는 주제를 가장 잘 담고 있는 단어라고 느꼈고요. 솔직히 말하면… 그냥 이름이 멋있기도 했고요. 하하.

5. [RSK] 앨범의 첫 번째 트랙이 <Sweet Revenge>인데, 이 곡이 어떤 이야기를 담고 있는지, 또 첫 곡으로 선택한 이유가 궁금해요.

원래는 이 곡을 앨범에 넣을 생각이 없었어요. 근데 리지 매캘파인(Lizzie McAlpine)의 최신 앨범 첫 곡 <The Elevator>를 듣고 나서 갑자기 <Sweet Revenge>를 다시 꺼내게 됐죠. 친구랑 밤에 그 노래를 듣다가 문득 ‘이거다’ 싶었어요. 전에 써놨던 장황한 곡 아이디어를 반으로 쪼개서, [Paradigm]의 시작점처럼 쓸 수 있겠더라고요. 그렇게 정리하고 나니, 갑자기 이 곡이 앨범 첫머리에 딱 어울리는 것 같았어요.

6. [RSK] 앨범과 같은 제목인 <Paradigm>이 앨범 전체를 대표한다고 볼 수 있을까요? 

앨범 정가운데에 있는 곡이라 위치 자체도 상징적인 것 같아요. 감정적으로도 가장 진폭이 큰 곡이고요. 앞쪽은 어쩌면 탄식 같은 흐름이고, 그 이후는 성장과 책임을 이야기하거든요. 그런 흐름에서 보면, <Paradigm>이 앨범의 중심을 딱 잡아주는 느낌이에요.

7. [RSK] <Paradigm>에서 표현하고 싶었던 ‘패러다임 전환’은 어떤 의미일까요?

<Ride>와 <In the Way>를 비교해 보면 바로 보여요. <Ride>는 좌절과 무관심에 가까운 노래고, <In the Way>는 애정과 희망을 담고 있거든요. 이 감정의 변화 자체가 제겐 ‘패러다임 전환’이었어요. 삶을 살다 보면, 어느 순간 내가 세상을 바라보는 방식이 달라졌다는 걸 깨닫게 되잖아요. 그 변화가 저는 참 아름답다고 생각해요.

8. [RSK] 이번 앨범은 사운드나 보컬 프로덕션이 굉장히 정교하게 다듬어졌다는 느낌이 들어요. 작업할 때 가장 신경 쓴 부분이 있다면요?

그렇게 느껴주셔서 정말 기뻐요. 이번 앨범은 제가 지금까지 만든 작업 중에서 가장 명확한 방향성을 갖고 있었던 앨범이에요. 그리고 처음으로 ‘프로듀서’라는 역할을 정말 제대로 받아들이고 만든 앨범이기도 하고요. 예전엔 그냥 자연스럽게 프로듀싱하게 되는 경우가 많았는데, 이번엔 처음부터 끝까지 직접 해보고 싶었어요. 물론 함께한 훌륭한 프로듀서들도 있지만, 거의 모든 걸 제 손으로 만들었기 때문에 사운드적으로도 좀 더 통일감 있게 느껴지는 것 같아요.

9. [RSK] 그동안 발표한 EP들에도 흐름이 느껴지더라고요. [Yearlong]은 감정의 지속, [Borderline]은 경계, [Suspension]은 현실과 환상의 모호함… 그렇다면 [Paradigm]은 어떤 상태를 담고 있나요?

시간이 지날수록 그 의미가 조금씩 달라질 것 같아요. 저는 항상 이전 작업에서 새롭게 뭔가를 발견하곤 하거든요. 지금으로선 [Paradigm]은 ‘변화의 상태’에 가장 가까운 것 같아요. 아주 정해진 결론이라기보단, 그 변화가 일어나고 있는 중간의 어떤 흐름 같은.

10. [RSK] 첫 EP를 냈을 때와 비교해서, 스스로 가장 달라졌다고 느끼는 건 무엇인가요?

정말 많은 게 바뀌었어요. 예전보다 제가 어떤 사람인지, 어떤 아티스트인지 더 잘 알게 됐고요. 강점도, 부족한 점도 더 또렷하게 보이더라고요. 예전엔 듣는 모든 음악을 다 내 작업 안에 녹여내고 싶었는데, 이제는 제 취향이 좀 더 정리됐어요. 그 덕분에 더 뚜렷한 정체성을 유지하면서도 과감한 시도를 할 수 있게 된 것 같아요.

11. [RSK] 만약 2019년의 크리스티안이 지금 [Paradigm]을 듣는다면 어떤 반응을 보였을까요?

재밌는 질문이네요. 그때의 제가 이 앨범을 들었다면, 제 디스코그래피 자체가 완전히 달라졌을 수도 있어요. 2020년부터 2022년까지의 변화 없이 곧장 이 사운드로 갔을지도 모르죠. 아니면 “이게 뭐야?” 하고 반항심에 불타서 전혀 다른 음악을 만들었을 수도 있고요. 뭐, 그건 아무도 모르겠죠. 하하.

12. [RSK] 크리스티안의 가사는 늘 인상적인데요. <Too Good>의 ‘Cause you're the water that runs forever / When I'm feeling like my well is running dry’ 같은 표현이 특히 그랬어요. 가사에 대한 영감은 주로 어디서 얻으세요?

곡마다 다르긴 한데, 공통된 건 매번 처음 곡을 쓰는 기분이라는 거예요. 몇 곡을 써왔든, 새로 쓰기 시작하면 또다시 완전히 처음으로 돌아가는 느낌이 들어요. 그게 맞는 방향 같고요. 그래서 이전 곡들과는 분리된 마음으로 작업하려고 해요. 쉽진 않지만, 그렇게 써낸 곡이 마음에 들면 정말 보람 있죠. 

13. [RSK] 책이나 영화처럼 다른 예술에서도 자주 영감을 받나요? 최근에 특히 인상 깊었던 작품이 있다면요?

요즘 정말 빠져 있는 작품이 있어요. 바로 드라마 <Severance>인데, 연출이 너무 창의적이더라고요. 시각적인 매체에도 점점 더 관심이 생기고 있어서, 언젠가는 영상 스토리텔링까지 제 작업으로 이어가고 싶어요.

14. [RSK] 만약 우리가 크리스티안의 작업실을 본다면 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 게 뭘까요? 그리고 그 공간이 음악과는 어떻게 연결되나요?

아마 방이 꽤 작다는 걸 가장 먼저 눈치채실 거예요. [Paradigm]은 전부 제 홈 스튜디오에서 녹음했거든요. 이 작은 공간에서 이런 사운드가 나왔다는 점이 꽤 마음에 들어요. 그리고… 두 번째로 눈에 띄는 건 아마도 제가 식물을 정말 못 키운다는 사실일 거예요. 

15. [RSK] 팬들이 잘 모를, 크리스티안만의 녹음 습관이 있을까요? 예를 들어 꼭 입는 옷 같은 거요.

재밌는 질문이네요. 사실 이번 앨범 작업할 땐 곡마다 분위기에 맞는 옷을 일부러 입으려고 했거든요. 아무도 없는 방에서조차요. 이상하게 들릴 수 있지만, 그렇게 하면 그 노래에 좀 더 몰입할 수 있었어요. 저한텐 꽤 효과 있었답니다.

16. [RSK] 최근 R&B, 네오소울, 인디팝 씬이 빠르게 변하고 있죠. 그런 흐름 속에서 본인의 음악은 어떤 방향으로 가고 있다고 느끼세요?

[Paradigm]처럼, 앞으로도 앨범마다 뚜렷한 사운드를 가진 작업을 하고 싶어요. 세계관도 좀 더 넓혀보고 싶고요. 정규 앨범도 생각 중이에요. 팬들과 신뢰가 쌓일수록 더 자유롭게 실험할 수 있다는 게 요즘 제일 큰 즐거움이에요.

17. [RSK] 올해 유럽 투어도 계획 중이라고 들었어요. 유럽과 미국 관객의 분위기는 어떻게 다를 것 같나요?

도시마다, 공연장마다 분위기는 정말 다 다르더라고요. 그래서 공연할 때는 그냥 기대 없이 그 순간을 즐기려고 해요. 하지만 요즘은 유럽과 영국 팬들과의 연결이 조금씩 깊어지고 있어서, 이번 투어는 저도 정말 기대돼요.

18. [RSK] 유럽에서 가장 기대되는 도시는 어디예요? 그곳에서 꼭 해보고 싶은 게 있다면요?

이번에 스톡홀름에 처음 가게 되거든요. 그래서 제일 기대돼요. 처음 만나는 팬들도 설레고, 도시 자체도 직접 걸어보고 싶어요.

19. [RSK] 마지막 질문이에요! 만약 이 인터뷰를 읽고 처음으로 당신의 음악을 듣는 사람이 있다면, [Paradigm]에서 가장 먼저 추천하고 싶은 곡은 어떤 곡인가요? 그리고 그 이유는요?

저는 <Ride>를 추천하고 싶어요. 이 곡이 이번 [Paradigm]의 대표곡이기도 하고, 개인적으로도 좋아하는 곡 중 하나거든요.

Christian Kuria: A Turning Point Called “Paradigm”

Christian Kuria’s new album “Paradigm” is more than just a collection of songs. It’s a record of a pivotal moment—one he faced after a long period of pain and silence. Through that process, he found a new way of looking at life, and this album captures that journey in full. There was a time when he collapsed under sorrow and drifted further away from reality. But eventually, he began walking toward the light again. “Paradigm” marks the first step he took in redefining the direction of his life. “You know, at some point in life, you realize the way you see the world has changed. And I think there’s something really beautiful about that.”

1. [RSK] Hi Christian, it's an honor to have you on Rolling Stone Korea. What's your day like today?

It’s an honor to be had! I grew up reading a lot of Rolling Stone interviews, so this is kind of a big deal for me. Thank you for taking the time!

2. [RSK] You have a new album out, “Paradigm”, and I was wondering what inspired you to make this album. 

The process really began right off the back of the Suspension of Disbelief tour in 2023. About a week after getting back home, I started making an instrumental as a creative exercise. That instrumental quickly became “Ride,” and immediately I knew I had laid the foundation for something new. It was the catalyst for the rest of the record.

3. [RSK] What is the message behind the album? 

In a lot of ways, “Paradigm” finishes the story that “Suspension” introduces. In the space between the two records, I hit some pretty challenging times, personally. “Paradigm” is the telling of the tale — the catharsis. There’s a strong narrative arc throughout the record, exploring the feeling of falling apart and losing grasp on reality before finally finding light. It’s a beautiful reflection of the past few years of my life.

4. [RSK] Is there a particular reason why you chose the title “Paradigm”?

After writing the song “Paradigm," it immediately felt like a no-brainer to title the album the same. I think it perfectly encapsulates the themes of transition that are all over this record. I also just thought it sounded cool.

5. [RSK] “Sweet Revenge” is the first song on the album, and I'd like to hear the story behind it and why you chose it as the first track.

“Sweet Revenge” was salvaged from the refuse pile last-minute after I first heard the opening track of Lizzie McAlpine’s latest record. It’s this short song called “The Elevator.” I remember listening with my friend one night and realizing that this rambling song idea I had called “Sweet Revenge” could be cut in half, and serve as the narrative introduction to the story told on “Paradigm.” I tried it, and suddenly the song made sense. I knew it had to be the first thing people heard when they played the album for the first time.

6. [RSK] Would you say that “Paradigm,” which is the same as the album title, is representative of the album as a whole? 

I think it’s fitting that the song “Paradigm” finds you in the dead center of the record. It marks the emotional peak of the album. Everything that comes before “Paradigm” is sort of a lament, whereas everything that comes after chronicles growth and accountability. In that way, I’d say it’s representative of the entire project. 

7. [RSK] What kind of paradigm shift did you want to represent in “Paradigm”?

When you think of the movement in emotional tone from a song like “Ride” — which is this anthemic declaration of frustration and indifference — to “In the Way” — this tender statement of sheer adoration and hope — you begin to see the “paradigm shift” I’m trying to capture. It’s about growing up enough as a person to be able to look back and recognize how the way you exist and see the world now contrasts how you did before. I think that’s a beautiful thing.

8. [RSK] The sound and vocal production is very polished throughout the album. What was your main focus sonically on this record?

Thank you, I’m glad you think so. This is the most focused I’ve ever been, aesthetically. It’s also the first time I’ve allowed myself to wear the producer hat in an official sense. On past records, I kind of became a producer by accident, whenever I was lucky enough to catch lightning in a bottle on my own. On “Paradigm”, I had newfound confidence in my craft as a producer, arranger and writer and set out to produce one hundred percent of it myself. I’ve been so lucky to collaborate with some very talented producers, and definitely want to continue to do so, but this record is special because almost everything you’re hearing is my own doing. I think that helps create the sonic through-line. 

9. [RSK] The titles of your EPs have a kind of 'flow' to them: 'Yearlong' is about lasting emotions, 'Borderline' is about boundaries, 'Suspension of Disbelief' is about breaking down the boundaries between reality and fantasy... What state does 'Paradigm' refer to?

I’m sure it will change for me over time; I’m always finding new meaning in past work. Right now, I’d say transformation is the state “Paradigm” is referring to. 

10. [RSK] What do you feel has changed the most about yourself from when you first released your EP to now?

So much has changed. I’m more sure of who I am as a person, as an artist. I feel that I’m more self-aware; I have a better understanding of what I do well and what I don’t do well. There was a time where I wanted to synthesize everything I heard into the music I made, but I think my taste has evolved to a point where I can take more creative risks without losing an artistic sense of self. 

11. [RSK] If Christian from 2019 were to listen to “Paradigm” today, what do you think his reaction would be?

What an excellent question. Knowing me then, if 2019 me heard “Paradigm,” my whole discography would probably sound very different. I think I would have skipped over the musical phases I went through from 2020 to 2022 and tried to pursue this sound. Or perhaps 2019 me would have felt betrayed by the soft rock direction, rebelled and destroyed the fabric of spacetime. I guess we’ll never know. 

12. [RSK] Let's talk about your work. I love the lyrics of your songs, and I still remember the first time I heard “Too Good” and the shock it gave me, because the poetic phrases like 'Cause you're the water that runs forever / When I'm feeling like my well is running dry' were so impressive. Where do you get your inspiration for your lyrics?

It’s a slightly different process every time. The peculiar, and sometimes maddening thing about songwriting is no matter how many songs you write, each song feels like your first. I think that’s how it should feel. I try to approach every song I write completely separately from others. It’s a painstaking task, but having a great song in the end makes it worth the battle.

13. [RSK] I was wondering if you often get inspiration from books, movies, and other works of art. If so, please share some of your favorites!

Like many right now, the television show “Severance” has been a major obsession of mine. I’m in love with the creative language of that show. Visual mediums in general have become a major fascination lately for me, and I’m hoping to expand my creative horizons to include more visual storytelling in the future. 

14. [RSK] If we could see the space where you work on your music, what would be the first thing we'd notice? I'm also curious to know how that space connects to your musical style.

The first thing you’d probably notice is how small the room is. “Paradigm” was recorded entirely in my home studio, but I love how the record sounds “bigger” than the space it was crafted in. The second thing you’d notice is how bad I am at keeping my plants alive.

15. [RSK] Do you have any 'little habits' that your fans might not know about? For example, do you have a specific pair of shoes you wear when recording, or do you only use a certain color pen when writing lyrics?

It’s funny you mention wearing specific things when recording because when working on this project, I made it a point to wear outfits that invoked the energy I was trying to capture. I would even get dressed when no one was around. It might sound strange, but I found it effective and inspiring. 

16. [RSK] With so many changes happening in the R&B, neo-soul, and indie-pop scenes lately, where do you see Christian's music riding the wave and where do you think it's headed?

In the same way that “Paradigm” leans into its aesthetic, I think future records will make similar commitments to specific sonic landscapes. I want to keep pushing the world building farther and take greater risks. Maybe I’ll make a more full-length record. The exciting thing about maturing as an artist is, once you’ve earned the trust of your core audience, you’re at greater liberty to explore new territories. 

17. [RSK] I heard you're also touring Europe this year. Do you expect any differences in audience reaction or vibe between performing in Europe and the U.S.?

Every city and audience in the world is different. I’ve learned to suspend all expectations no matter where I’m playing. But I’ve sensed a deepening connection with European and UK listeners, so I’m very excited to bring this music to our friends overseas. 

18. [RSK] I'm also curious if you have a favorite city in Europe that you're looking forward to visiting and if there's anything you'd like to experience there.

It will be my first time in Stockholm, so I’m particularly excited to see the city and meet the fans there for the first time.

19. [RSK] Last question already, if someone reading this interview was listening to your music for the first time, which song from “Paradigm” would you recommend to them first and why?

I’d recommend “Ride.” Not only do I think it’s the flagship song for this “Paradigm,” but it’s one of my favorite songs of mine thus far.
